San Marino di Bentivoglio combines a historic park landscape with rural culture. The historic Parco di Villa Smeraldi covers nearly four hectares and lies between the Navile Canal and the abandoned riverbed of the Savena. It was laid out in the style of English landscape parks in the second half of the 19th century. In the Pomario of Villa Smeraldi, old fruit plants are preserved as a living reserve of biodiversity. The Pomario includes around 150 varieties of apples, pears, peaches, cherries, plums and apricots.

Museum and Everyday History
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in the historic complex of Villa Smeraldi. Using material evidence and archival materials, it documents work and life in the Bolognese plain up to the mid-20th century. Some sections cover the production cycles of hemp, wheat and milk. The museum offers educational and outreach programs for schools and the general public. It also offers the school programs “La casa contadina”, “Dal grano al pane” and “La canapa, il filo e la tela”. The areas open to the public are accessible to people with disabilities and have compliant ramps as well as lifts or freight elevators.
Getting to San Marino di Bentivoglio
For travel to the area, TPER bus routes 446 and 447 connect Bologna with the San Marino Centro stop in San Marino di Bentivoglio; the journey takes about 30 minutes. From the San Marino Centro stop, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina can be reached on foot in about five minutes. This makes it possible to visit the museum without having to walk long distances from public transport.
From the Ciclovia del Navile, a branch leads to San Marino di Bentivoglio and the Museo della Civiltà Contadina via the side road Canali e Crociali at Via di Saliceto. The cycling connection thus complements the bus connection as another way of accessing the museum.
Festivals with Regional Character
The Festa della Semina – Open Day del Gusto Autunno includes a traditional farmers’ market selling and offering tastings of seasonal local products. The Festa della Semina – Open Day del Gusto Autunno is a recurring autumn event at Villa Smeraldi. San Marino in festa is a recurring festival featuring an all-night celebration on the first Saturday in September. The recurring Festa della mietitura e della trebbiatura takes place at the Museo della Civiltà Contadina at the end of June.

The Incanto Verde is a historic dance floor at Villa Smeraldi. The frescoed Salone delle Feste at Villa Smeraldi is used for conferences and concerts.
