The Monterenzio Area: River Valleys and Open Slopes

The Monterenzio area lies between the valleys of the Sillaro and Idice rivers. Clay-rich soils shape an open landscape with extensive pastures interrupted by stands of downy oak. The Salse del Dragone form a distinctive landscape feature: small clay hills from which small amounts of clay emerge. Monte delle Formiche reaches an elevation of 638 m and features extensive areas of exposed rock alternating with wooded sections. Monte delle Formiche is visible from the SP7 between Fiumetto and Savazza. Historic Trails and Changing Landscapes

The ancient Via Flaminia Minor has been restored and re-marked as a trekking route. It mainly follows CAI Trail 801 from the ruins of the ancient city of Claterna to the Raticosa Pass in Tuscany. Villa di Cassano near Monterenzio is the middle stage of this route and conceptually separates the marl landscapes of the Parco dei Gessi e Calanchi dell’Abbadessa from the forests of the Apennine ridges.

The Anello di Monterenzio loop trail also features a pronounced change in terrain. It connects Monte delle Formiche with Monterenzio, descends towards the Idice Valley and then climbs back up into the mountains. This route is particularly relevant when planning your day if you are looking for a loop trail with alternating valley and mountain sections.

Archaeology and Local Culture

The Monte Bibele massif between the Idice and Zena valleys contains an Etruscan-Celtic settlement with a residential area, a burial ground and two places of worship. In the municipality of Monterenzio, a museum houses numerous finds from the archaeological site of Monte Bibele.

The painting “Fiumetto di Monterenzio” also adds an artistic connection to the area. Mar Silla painted the picture from nature; the painting is attributed to Martuffi Silla, also known as Mar Silla. For orientation in the area, the “Monterenzio Fiumetto” bus stop bears the number 94590. At kilometer 18+350, the municipal road Via Fiumetto is located on the left. Both names are specific reference points when incorporating local names and road connections into your plans. A historic proposal for the Bologna–Firenzuola–Borgo San Lorenzo railway line envisaged a route along the Idice Valley to Fiumetto. In this historic railway project, Fiumetto was designated as the municipal seat of Monterenzio; the planned route was to climb uphill from Fiumetto to Quinzano.
