Bondeno between canals and early history
Bondeno opens up access to a waterscape and history reaching far back into the past. The Burana Canal is the most significant canal in Bondeno’s dense network of waterways. Archaeological investigations in the municipality have documented a Neolithic settlement at the former Fornace Grandi. This creates a place where early settlement history and later cultural themes come together across different sightseeing interests.

Museums with different focuses
The Museo Civico Archeologico “G. Ferraresi” offers primary and secondary schools educational programmes on archaeology and the past. A Museo Civico Archeologico is located in Stellata in the House of Virginio, the son of the poet Ludovico Ariosto. The Casa Museo “La Casa del Pittore – Archivio Carlo Tassi” is one of the institutions recognised with the designation “Case e studi delle persone illustri dell’Emilia-Romagna”. Visits to the Casa Museo take place accompanied by the house staff.
The former primary school building in Scortichino is also home to the Museo della Moto “Glorie Italiane” di Scortichino. It displays dozens, if not hundreds, of motorcycles that have shaped the history of two-wheeled vehicles. The range therefore extends from archaeological themes and the history of individual houses to the history of motorcycles.
Landmarks on the Po and in the Matildic area
Among the prominent buildings is the Chiesa Arcipretale, also known as the Duomo di Bondeno, which is regarded as a landmark of the Matildic area. In Stellata, the Rocca Possente di Stellata stands on the right bank of the Po; it is one of Bondeno’s landmarks. The fortress was built around the year 1000 and expanded and reinforced by the Este family in 1362. This building therefore combines its riverside location with an architectural history reaching back to the Middle Ages.
Religious history and the local market
Religious history can be encountered at the Santuario della Madonna della Pioppa in Ospitale. It originated from a wayside shrine erected in 1680 and is associated with an apparition of the Madonna before a deaf and mute girl. The site adds a religious narrative to the architectural and museum themes, which may be of interest for a cultural trip with a different focus.
Another facet of local culture is offered by the Mercatino dell'Antiquariato e dell'usato di Stellata. The market takes place on the second Sunday of every month and includes tastings of typical local products.
