Fosso Ghiaia between Pine Forest and Trails
Fosso Ghiaia can be explored via the Pineta di Classe: the entrance to the pine forest is located in the village, from where you can reach Parco 1° Maggio in the centre of the pine forest. The park is an equipped green area; its entrance is located on the Statale Adriatica in the centre of Fosso Ghiaia. This provides a clear starting point for planning forest trails, cycling connections and other destinations in the immediate surroundings.

Trails through the Pine Forest
From Parco 1° Maggio, you can use the trails in the “Nel cuore della pineta” area on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. These three options offer different focuses without requiring you to leave the forest area described: you can experience it walking, cycling or in the saddle. The trails are therefore particularly suitable for planning a trip in which you want to consciously choose the pace and mode of transport.
A separate loop trail is Le Querce di Dante. The route is approximately 4 km long and can be walked or cycled. Its starting point is in the area of Parco 1° Maggio in the Pineta di Classe. The trail leads to a large oak grove which, according to tradition, is said to have inspired Dante Alighieri to describe the “dense, living forest”. This route thus combines a manageable loop trail, the pine forest and a literary tradition.
Cycling Route and Piazza
Fosso Ghiaia is also easy for cyclists to navigate. A cycling route between Classe and Mirabilandia runs through Fosso Ghiaia and along the Pineta di Classe. Piazza di Fosso Ghiaia serves as an arrival point for cyclists coming from or travelling to Ravenna when they want to visit Parco 1° Maggio in the Pineta di Classe. The piazza is therefore clearly connected with the cycling route and the visit to the pine forest.
Nature and Rowing
In addition to the pine forest, two other themes are part of Fosso Ghiaia’s character. The hamlet is home to the Oasi delle Cicogne, an institution dedicated to protecting the white stork, an endangered species. The Bacino di canottaggio “Standiana” is also located near the hamlet, a brackish-water lake used as a regatta course for rowing. Nature and water-sports interests therefore each have their own point of reference here.
Culture in the Immediate Surroundings
For cultural and historical interests, the immediate surroundings of Fosso Ghiaia include the Classis Ravenna Museum - Museo della Città e del Territorio and the archaeological area of the Basilica di San Severo. The Basilica di San Severo is classified as an ancient site. Together with the tradition surrounding Le Querce di Dante, this area broadens the focus beyond purely nature and cycling experiences and offers points of connection for visitors who wish to combine landscape with history and culture.
