A circular route through the historic town center
The «Ator par Capriva» route is a 7-kilometer circular route on paved roads. It leads through the historic center of Capriva del Friuli and the surrounding green spaces. Along the way, it passes through Piazza Vittoria and by the parish church of the Most Holy Name of Mary. Via Verdi also takes the route to the Church of the Santissima Trinità, popularly known as the Church of San Giuseppe. It is precisely this combination of the town center, streets and green stretches that makes the route a manageable way to experience several facets of Capriva along one continuous itinerary.
Churches, fortifications and historic estates
The Church of the Santissima Trinità is popularly known as the Church of San Giuseppe and was built between 1570 and 1575. The Castello di Spessa has a different architectural character: its present form was created at the beginning of the 20th century in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by the Trieste architect Ruggero Berlam. The castle also has a historic connection to Giacomo Casanova, who was a guest at Castello di Spessa in 1773.
The Centa is a circular defensive complex first mentioned in 1521 and with older origins. On the road to Castello di Spessa, the route passes an area where the remains of a Roman kiln were found.
Castle parks, golf and the landscape of the Collio
The park of Castello di Spessa completely surrounds the castle and is bordered by vineyards and the adjoining 18-hole golf course. The Golf & Country Club Castello di Spessa has an 18-hole course that winds through gently rolling hills with vineyards and olive trees. The Villa Russiz complex is reached through an avenue of chestnut trees and a cedar grove, leading into a park with imposing trees and a great variety of flowers.
The historic estate of Villa Russiz, covering 93 hectares, included a villa castle, a wine cellar, a boarding school, a chapel, a former silk mill, stables and a mausoleum. The Vidussi estate covers around 30 hectares of vineyards on the hills stretching from Capriva del Friuli to Cormons. In the Collio goriziano near Capriva del Friuli, dozens of hectares of vineyards also lie in geometrically arranged rows across gentle hills.
