Sgonico between the Cave World, Karst and Hiking Trails

Sgonico combines karst landscapes, speleology, nature observation, hiking and viticulture into a diverse travel destination. Grotta Gigante and Its Depths

About 80 metres below the surface in Grotta Gigante, the Grande Caverna opens up as a single natural chamber. It is 98.50 metres high, 167.60 metres long and 76.30 metres wide. The Speleo Experience leads through a complex system of vertical shafts and short horizontal passages to a depth of 252 metres below the surface. This creates a cave experience in which the dimensions of the chamber and the depth of the underground routes are the main focus.

Museum and Speleological Research

The Museo Scientifico Speleologico della Grotta Gigante occupies two floors of the building where visitors to the cave are welcomed. The exhibition covers geology, speleology, palaeontology, archaeology, geophysical and karst research, as well as flora and fauna. The museum also displays a complete skeleton of a cave bear of the subspecies Ursus Spelaeus subspecies Uralensis.

Karst Plants and Nature Reserves

At the Carsiana Botanical Garden, native karst plants are assigned to their respective habitats, which are laid out on the slopes of the characteristic sinkhole. Two nature reserves complement the natural experiences around Sgonico: Monte Lanaro Nature Reserve covers 285 hectares, while Orsario Nature Reserve covers 156 hectares. Both are located in the municipalities of Sgonico (Zgonik) and Monrupino (Repentabor).

Hiking Trails with Panoramic Views

The Anello del Monte Lanaro circular trail passes through oak forests, karst meadows and rocky outcrops typical of the area. From the summit, the view extends from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea. Vedetta d'Italia, a viewing point, is also located in the immediate vicinity of Sgonico.

Church and Viticulture

The Gemina Trail leads to the 15th-century Church of San Ulderico. It is considered one of the oldest churches in the Karst. A historic trail therefore complements the nature and cave themes with a destination connected to church history.

In Sgonico, local winegrowers who have declared their wine production and are registered in the business register of the Trieste Chamber of Commerce may sell their own wine directly through an Osmiza.
