San Leonardo: History in Several Layers

The fortified settlement of San Leonardo near Samatorza is dated from the Middle Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages. Its inner wall is 260 metres long, the outer wall approximately 600 metres; the site also has four terraces. San Leonardo is generally considered one of the oldest and most extensive castellieri in the Trieste Karst. The first written mention of the settlement of Samatorza dates from 1327.

Trails, Caves and Historical Traces

Trail No. 010 passes through Samatorza. In the vicinity of the village, it passes in front of Grotta Ternovizza and then continues to Ternova Piccola. Grotta Lesa is part of the Škaljunk Lupinc Park educational trail. This trail reconstructs trenches and other military installations from the First World War. The Škaljunk Lupinc Park trail passes through the main entrance of Grotta Lesa and exits again via a stone staircase. The stone staircase on the Škaljunk Lupinc Park trail should also be taken into account when planning your day personally. The Grotta Azzurra cave is also known as Grotta Azzurra di Samatorza.

Churches and Places of Remembrance

On the summit of Monte San Leonardo, the remains of a small single-nave church with an apse, dedicated to Saint Leonard, have been preserved. The Church of San Ulderico dates from the 15th century and is considered one of the oldest churches in the Karst. The Church of San Ulderico has a small rose window and a bell gable with three bells. In the small cemetery behind the church, alongside local residents, lies a Polish soldier who died in 1917.

On the Way to Samatorza

Several connections are available to help you find your way around the area. Bus route 46 connects Prosek with Samatorca. The Gemina hiking route leads from Ternova to Samatorza along an unpaved path. The unpaved path of the Gemina hiking route is a practical factor to consider when choosing your footwear and planning your hiking day. For cyclists, the Aurisina–Samatorza–Precenico route leads as far as Samatorza. Bus route 46 and the cycling route each refer to different places: Prosek and Samatorca for the bus connection, and Aurisina, Samatorza and Precenico for the cycling route.

Osmize and Agriturismo

Osmize and agriturismo establishments welcome visitors in Samatorza. In Samatorza-Samatorca, several osmize open simultaneously each year for one weekend in mid-May. During this weekend, homemade wine and cold cuts are offered.
