Buttrio between Wine and History
Buttrio combines wine culture, villa architecture and archaeobotanical traces to create a diverse travel destination. The municipality encompasses the DOC areas “Colli Orientali del Friuli”, “Grave del Friuli” and “Prosecco”.
The 18th-century Villa di Toppo-Florio overlooks a park of particular archaeological and botanical interest. After the Friuli Venezia Giulia region transferred the villa and park to the municipality of Buttrio in 1998, the municipality began restoring and renovating the complex.

Villa di Toppo-Florio and Museum of Wine Culture
The west wing houses the Museum of the Civilization of Wine of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The first museum section traces the history of wine culture from the earliest evidence to the present day, with a particular focus on the 20th century. This makes it possible to view winegrowing not only as a culinary topic, but also as part of the region’s history.
Archaeobotanical Park and Roman Artefacts
The archaeobotanical park of Buttrio is considered the only archaeobotanical park still in existence in northern Italy. As part of the “TreeArt Festival” project, it also hosts modern art installations. Artefacts are visible in the park and at the edge of Villa di Toppo-Florio; Roman artefacts recovered in Aquileia were used in the park’s design.
The complex also includes a lapidarium. It contains numerous individual finds that are too small to be displayed in the park. One artefact in the lapidarium has been dated to around AD 190–200. This gives you a more precise view of individual pieces of evidence that might attract less attention in the more extensive park setting.
Villas, Castle Site and Protected Vineyards
Villa Morpurgo, also known as “Castel Morpurgo”, stands on the site of the former castle of Buttrio. This castle was destroyed after its capture in 1306 through the intervention of people from Udine, Gemona and Cividale. Villa Morpurgo and the vineyards surrounding it are protected by the Soprintendenza del Friuli Venezia Giulia because of their historical and ecological value.
Wine Events and Panorama
The Fiera regionale dei vini di Buttrio includes wine tastings, cultural events, guided tours and family activities. One edition of the event was opened at Villa di Toppo-Florio as the 93rd edition. Another view of Buttrio can be enjoyed from a viewpoint in the hills known as “the pines”, which offers a wide panorama.
