Codroipo between Archaeology and Venetian History

Codroipo combines archaeological traces, Venetian history, architectural heritage and an expansive landscape. When choosing a hotel in Codroipo, you can therefore either focus your trip on culture or make a cycling tour designated as easy the centrepiece of your visit. The key themes are not concentrated in a single attraction, but instead lie in several different facets of the town.

Archaeological Traces Around Gradiscje

The Museo Archeologico di Codroipo was established following archaeological research in Codroipo and the surrounding areas. It therefore represents the archaeological dimension of the town and complements a visit to the Gradiscje site. The protohistoric settlement of Gradiscje stood on a moderately elevated, square-shaped area. From Via Gradiscje, a short path opposite Codroipo’s sports field leads to the Gradiscje archaeological site. This gives you a clear thematic focus if you would like to view traces of the historical landscape not only in the museum, but also at their specific location.

Theatre, Fair and Local Culture

The history of architecture and events is also part of Codroipo. The original Teatro comunale di Codroipo was built in the 1930s according to plans by the architect Ermes Midena as a Casa del Balilla. In addition to its main function as a theatre, it was also equipped for film screenings. The Fiera di San Simone is a traditional fair in Codroipo and reached its 46th edition. Both examples show different sides of cultural life: the theatre as a building with multiple uses and the fair as a long-established type of event.

Villa Manin: Venetian Grandeur and Napoleonic History

Villa Manin in the municipality of Codroipo is one of the largest Venetian villas ever built. Its frescoed halls house multimedia installations, exhibitions and events. At the same time, the site is connected with a decisive moment in European history: Napoleon Bonaparte used Villa Manin as his headquarters and signed the Treaty of Campoformido there on 17 October 1797, sealing the end of the Serenissima. Those interested in architecture, art and political history will therefore find several ways of engaging with the same place.

Landscape and an Easy Cycling Tour

The Parco delle Risorgive di Codroipo covers approximately 45 hectares. Its size makes it a distinct landscape theme during your stay and complements the historical destinations with a natural setting. For cycling, the Anello delle risorgive (R023) is a suitable option; it is classified as an easy cycling tour. On the Anello delle risorgive (R023), you cycle from Codroipo towards Villa Manin. This allows the cultural focus on the villa to be combined with a specific route description that begins in the town, without requiring a demanding tour profile.
