Churches, Village Character and History
The Church of San Giorgio combines its striking setting with views over the village and the valley. The Gothic Chapel of San Nicolò adds another dimension, with its 15th-century frescoes. Together, the two sites showcase different aspects of sacred architecture: the church’s position on the rocky outcrop and the frescoes in the chapel. Comeglians’ historic districts are also part of its character; notable buildings include Cjase Boter and Palazzo Di Gleria.
A precisely located historical trace can be found in the Church of San Vincenzo martire in Comeglians. An inscription bearing the year 1864 is carved into the lintel of a niche to the left of the entrance. Alongside the chapel and churches, historic buildings and a dated inscription offer further ways to explore the village’s cultural history.
Culture Throughout the Municipality
Not all cultural sites are in the village center. A cultural trail passes through Povolaro and Maranzanis before reaching the Church of San Floreano. These villages feature typical Carnian architectural styles from the 17th and 18th centuries, made accessible to visitors through the Albergo Diffuso. San Floreano is home to an important wooden altar by Michael Path, dating from 1541, other paintings and an Art Nouveau altarpiece by Giuseppe Da Pozzo. The cultural trail thus leads from historic architectural styles to artworks from different periods.
Further examples can be found in the hamlets: in Mieli, the votive Chapel of San Leonardo preserves 16th-century frescoes by Lorenzo Paulitti of Ampezzo. In Tualis, the Church of San Vincenzo houses two noteworthy wooden sculptures by Michael Parth, as well as popular votive offerings. These places extend the cultural itinerary beyond Comeglians to the wider municipality.
“Das cidulas”: a fire tradition on January 6
The fire tradition known as “das cidulas” is still organized in Comeglians by the village’s unmarried men, and represents the community’s unity and solidarity. It takes place on January 6. After nightfall, glowing wooden discs are thrown into the night, dedicated to a real or hoped-for couple. For those interested in local customs, this is a living tradition whose ritual and symbolic dedication are closely linked.
Walking and Cycling Routes
The “cleva” walking trail leads from Comeglians to the parish church of San Giorgio. Separate from this is a network of hiking trails in the lower part of the municipality, linking Comeglians, Maranzanis and Povolaro. One route leads to a church, while the other is a network connecting several places—a useful distinction if you would rather focus your time on one specific route or explore several locations.
For cyclists, the Panoramica delle Vette is another option. It starts in the hamlet of Tualis, climbs the southern slope of Monte Crostis and reaches an elevation of 1,900 meters; the route is popular with cyclists. The Crostis ridge route can be reached from Comeglians via the hamlets of Mieli and Tualis. The Panoramica therefore climbs the southern slope, while the ridge route is accessible via these hamlets. Road conditions may vary; check them before setting out.
Getting There and Choosing a Base
By car, you can reach Comeglians from the Carnia motorway exit via Tolmezzo, Villa Santina and Ovaro. By public transport, travel via Udine railway station, then take buses from Udine to Tolmezzo and from Tolmezzo to Comeglians.
