Moggio Udinese: Val Alba, mountain trails and San Gallo Abbey

In the Val Alba area, you can take an easy walk to Rifugio Vuâlt and the wooded hollow of the same name. Detours lead to Bivacco Bianchi, the springs of the Torrente Alba and the remains of military installations. This allows you to combine the natural environment with short walks or more demanding mountain destinations without conflating the distinct character of each destination.

Hikes to hamlets and peaks

Stavoli di Moggio can only be reached on foot. The hike starts in Campiolo and follows CAI trail 417 along the Torrente Glagnò. The destination consists of a small group of now-uninhabited stone houses that tell of former life based on alpine farming, isolation and adaptation to the mountain environment. The hike can be extended into a loop via the uninhabited hamlets of Moggessa di Là and Moggessa di Qua. The complete loop is just under 11 kilometres long and involves approximately 650 metres of ascent.

The Anello del Monticello also offers a clearly defined circular hike: it begins in Località Travasans in Moggio Alto, initially follows a partly concreted road and then continues along a forest track. At Monte Monticello, the route reaches an elevation of 1,362 metres, where a 360-degree panorama opens up. CAI trail 743a runs from Moggio Udinese to Stalli Stivane. The Grauzaria–Monticello–Moggessa–Moggio route passes several old hamlets of Moggio Udinese.

For experienced hikers, the hike to Monte Chiavals from the car park in Val Alba is classified as an EE-grade route. It is approximately 13 kilometres long and involves around 1,100 metres of ascent. The starting point is reached from Moggio Udinese via the SS13, the SP112 and the road through Val Aupa; the route ends at a small car park near the access restriction to the Val Alba nature reserve. The moderately difficult circular hike on Monte Flop passes via Rifugio Grauzaria, is 13.8 kilometres long and takes 6 hours and 55 minutes. The ascent leads through pine forest and high-altitude meadows with gentians and orchids; the summit area has a rich variety of flora and fauna. The starting point of this hike can be reached by public transport: the Moggio–Bevorchians line runs to the Gialloz stop, followed by a walk to the Nanghez car park, where trail 437 to the rifugio begins.

Cycle route through tunnels and over viaducts

For cycle tours, the Alpe Adria FVG1 route starts in Moggio Udinese. From there, it uses the old railway line and passes through tunnels and over viaducts and bridges. The cycle route thus complements the many hiking destinations with its own way of experiencing the landscape along a historic transport line.

Abbey and fortified history

San Gallo Abbey is located on Colle di Santo Spirito in Moggio di Sopra, within the municipality of Moggio Udinese. The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1085 by Federico di Moravia, Patriarch of Aquileia, and consecrated in 1119 by Patriarch Ulrico di Eppenstein. The abbey church houses a Nacchini organ from the 18th century, considered the largest organ in Friuli. The square Torre delle Prigioni is the oldest surviving part of the original fortified complex of Moggio Udinese.

Farm products from Val Aupa

Brovadâr is a traditional processed product of the municipality of Moggio Udinese, particularly Val Aupa. It is made from a small-growing, late-sown variety of turnip, Brassica rapa. At Malga Rio Secco, there is an agriturismo where you can taste, among other products, cheeses and cured meats made at the alpine pasture. From Malga Rio Secco, trails lead to Casera Cason di Lanza and the alpine pastures of Caserutte, Valbertat Bassa, Meledis Bassa and Ramaz.
