Churches, Museums and Historic Sites
The Pieve di Santa Maria di Gorto is an old Carnic baptistery church between the districts of Agrons and Cella and is located on the Cammino delle Pievi. It is one of Friuli’s oldest buildings. This structure brings together a religious function, a distinctive historical classification and its location on the Cammino delle Pievi. Its position between the two districts also makes the church a precisely identifiable part of the local cultural landscape.
The Museo della Pieve di Gorto is housed in the former village dairy in Cella. It displays Late Antique and Lombard finds, as well as stone fragments from Lombard-Frankish places of worship. The “Planelas e Scugjelas” exhibition documents the work and products of the kilns in Alta Carnia. Archaeological finds therefore stand alongside insights into earlier working and production environments.
The Palazzo Micoli Toscano in Mione was built in 1836. Casa De Corte is a typical example of 17th-century architecture in Carnia. The building housing the Museo del Legno e della Segheria Veneziana dates from 1755. Together, these architectural landmarks refer to different periods and forms of regional architecture.
In the village of San Martino in Ovaro, the remains of an early Christian basilica and an early medieval necropolis can be visited. Both findings make different historical periods visible in the same place and complement the area’s ecclesiastical and architectural-historical references.
