Fortress history between the Alps and an old customs station
Chiusaforte combines military history with trails leading into an impressive mountain landscape. Since the Middle Ages, the town was home to a customs station of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. A prominent testimony to the more recent past is the Fortress of Chiusaforte: it was built in 1904 and put into operation shortly afterwards.
The fortress still contains visible casemates, a kitchen, storage rooms, officers’ quarters, soldiers’ quarters, a workshop and a power plant. This allows you to experience the complex not only as an exterior structure, but also through its preserved rooms and their different functions. The permanent exhibition Memorie della Canal del Ferro is located in the former Zucchi Barracks. It displays ammunition, the personal equipment of soldiers, and materials about the provisions and lives of soldiers at the front.
The road to the fortress begins near the Ponte Peraria railway tunnel. From there, the road climbs up to the fortress and offers views of the Julian Alps. Waterfalls and geological trails
The nature around Chiusaforte can be explored through several different themes. The Chiusaforte waterfall map shows the locations of 13 waterfalls. At Fontanone di Goriuda, a trail passes through a protected rock grotto close to the spray and offers a special view into the waterfall. This makes the site particularly interesting for visitors who want to combine water, rock and immediate impressions of the landscape.
The botanical nature trail MIRABILA – Sentiero botanico del Bila Pec is one of the trails in the municipality of Chiusaforte. The geological nature trail Foran dal Mus has a different focus: it brings the extraordinary geological features in the highest part of the Canin Massif to life. In this way, botanical and geological observations stand alongside the waterfalls as independent ways of experiencing the landscape.
Routes, railway line and connections
The area’s former transport history also shapes how it is navigated today. The former Chiusaforte railway station is a seasonal logistical base on the Ciclovia Alpe Adria, which follows the route of the old railway line here. Those who combine Chiusaforte with a cycling tour therefore find a concrete link between the historic railway line and today’s cycle route.
Bus route 191 connects Chiusaforte with Sella Nevea. For excursions towards the higher mountain region, this connection is an important part of local orientation. Access to the Costa Curnic artillery battery leads from the first bridgehead across the Rio Raccolana on the SP76 provincial road towards Sella Nevea, via CAI trail 632 towards Rifugio Gilberti. After approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes of walking, the trail reaches a military road.

The Costa Curnic artillery battery was planned with four 75 mm steel guns to support the Fortress of Chiusaforte. In Sella Nevea, the ski resort offers freeriding, snowboarding and alpine skiing on its slopes.
Casera Goriuda currently serves as a mountain hut in the park and offers a viewpoint over the Montasio Plateau and the surrounding mountains.
