Castello d’Arcano and its fortifications
Castello d’Arcano is a 13th-century castle. It was built on the structures of an earlier fortified complex that may date from before the 10th century. The castle includes a well-preserved double fortification wall, a moat and a gate tower. A wooden drawbridge formerly stood in its place. The complex provides a clear architectural focus for exploring the medieval history of Rive D'arcano.
Church and regional cultural history
The present-day building of Chiesa di San Mauro dates from the 16th century and was created by reconstructing and expanding an earlier church from the 12th to 13th century. The church’s oldest fresco depicts Christ as a young man and dates from approximately the 12th century. The Palazzo Florio is also located in the wider regional area around Rive D'arcano.
Traces of early settlements
Castelliere della Zucule in Rive d'Arcano is an archaeological site associated with the first human settlements during the Bronze Age and the early phases of the subsequent Iron Age. Its interior covers 3.6 hectares, and its circumference is 840 metres.
Forte Col Roncone
Forte Col Roncone was part of the “Medio Tagliamento” defensive line. This was established to protect the bridges over the Tagliamento. Forte Col Roncone is also a starting point for several excursions into nature. The site therefore combines a military-historical context with a starting point for nature-based activities.
Nature in the surrounding area
The Prati di Col San Floreano biotope is a protected natural area covering approximately 35 hectares. The Cascate Butines waterfall and Monte Ragogna mountain are also located in the area around Rive d'Arcano. Rive D'arcano by bike
On its return leg, the Castles cycle circuit (R018) passes through Rive d’Arcano. It then meets the cycle path along the Tagliamento (FVG6) in Villanova and returns to San Daniele del Friuli. The route therefore gives you an opportunity to incorporate Rive D'arcano into a longer cycling excursion with individual stages and regional connections.
