Sottoselva appeals to travelers who wish to combine religious heritage with a program focused on cultural history. In the town, tangible evidence of religious history takes center stage; Palmanova broadens the perspective with fortifications, museums, and underground structures. This allows you to plan a varied trip to Italy without conflating the distinct themes of Sottoselva and Palmanova.

Church History in Sottoselva

The traditional Perdon dal Rosari celebration takes place in Sottoselva on the third Sunday in October. The parish of Sottoselva also takes part in the annual pilgrimage to the Madonna di Barbana Sanctuary. Both references give the town a religious framework, but they differ in form: here, the focus is on a traditional celebration in Sottoselva, while there, it is on the parish’s participation in a pilgrimage.

A central testament is the Church of Saints Lorenzo and Sebastiano. It was created in 1813 through the merger of the churches of Sottoselva and Villa San Lorenzo. The present structure was completed in 1847. The church also contains a holy-water font dating from 1562, which comes from the demolished Church of San Lorenzo. Thus, in one location, you encounter several clearly distinguishable historical layers that relate directly to architectural history and religious tradition.

Palmanova as a Destination for Cultural and Military History

Palmanova offers an independent exploration of the historical theme. The collections of the Civic Historical Museum, housed in the Trevisan Palace, include original documents, drawings, weapons, armor, and memorabilia from the Venetian, Napoleonic, Austrian, and Italian periods. The museum serves as a starting point for understanding the history of the city and the development of its complex fortified urban structure.

The Fortress of Palmanova was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 9, 2017. Its architectural features include a dense network of underground galleries, some of which are equipped for visits. The Gallerie Sotterranee di Contromina offer a 550-meter underground route for exploring Palmanova’s defensive system. Another historical date is A.D. Palma alle Armi, a historical reenactment event held on the first weekend of September.

Plan Opening Hours and Travel Arrangements Carefully

The Gallerie di Contromina and Baluardo Donato offer weekend openings, special openings, and guided visits for groups by reservation.

Palmanova is served by the Udine–Cervignano del Friuli railway line. The city is also served by the ARRIVA UDINE – Autoservizi FVG (TPL FVG) bus service. If you include Palmanova in your travel plans, two explicitly documented forms of public transportation are therefore available for orientation.
