Cannobio combines a historic center with religious buildings, distinctive trails and a landscape shaped by water. For planning your trip, the town can be explored among cobblestone streets, churches and palaces, along the Torrente Cannobino, as well as on routes to the Orrido di Sant’Anna and Carmine Superiore. Local cuisine and longstanding traditions complement this diverse character.
Churches, Palaces and Medieval Traces
In Cannobio’s historic center, numerous palaces dating from the 17th to the 19th century still stand along cobblestone streets today. A religious focal point is the Santuario della SS. Pietà near the lakeside promenade. Its construction lasted from 1575 to 1614 and can be traced back to the miracles that took place in 1522 in the house of Tommaso Zaccheo.
San Vittore was rebuilt from 1730 onward and has medieval roots. The Chapel of the Annunciation contains a wooden crucifix from the 16th century; the furnishings also include two notable triptychs. Cannobio therefore offers not only historic architecture, but also specific art-historical details within its churches.
Carmine Superiore is a well-preserved medieval village that can only be reached on foot from the district of Carmine Inferiore below. San Gottardo also stands in Carmine Superiore, a 14th-century church with several frescoes, most of which are attributed to the Maestro di Carzoneso.
Orrido di Sant’Anna and Torrente Cannobino
The landscape along the Torrente Cannobino has been shaped over a long period: over thousands of years, its waters hollowed out the valley’s rock walls. The green water reaches depths of up to 25 meters. The gorge of the Orrido di Sant’Anna is crossed by a pedestrian bridge from the 12th century and a road bridge from the 19th century.
For getting around locally, access to the Orrido di Sant’Anna is important: it is reached via a cycle path and stairs. The terrain is uneven and consists of earth; accessibility for people with disabilities is limited. You should take these conditions into account when planning your excursion and assessing the appropriate pace for your trip.
Cycling and Hiking Trails with Different Profiles
The cycle path from Cannobio begins at the Lido di Cannobio. It initially runs on both sides of the river, comes together again at the Ponte Ballerino and continues through the forest along the river. The route thus combines open sections by the water with a further stretch through the forest.
Sentiero 2 is an easy, family-friendly trail. It follows the Torrente Cannobino along the cycle path and climbs up to the gorges of the Orrido di S. Anna. Sentiero 5 follows a different route concept: the route leads from Cannobio via the Via delle Genti to Carmine Superiore and then on to Cannero with its castles.
Local Cuisine and the Tradition on January 7
As part of the commemorative tradition on January 7, all the town’s restaurants serve the same simple menu. The first course is Minestra di pasta e fagioli, followed by Luganighe with boiled potatoes and savoy cabbage. On the same day, thousands of lights illuminate a procession in Cannobio that carries relics of San Vittore to the Santuario.
Pan Dolce is also part of the town’s culinary identity: it is produced in the municipality of Cannobio in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. When choosing a hotel in Cannobio, you can align your priorities with these local features – historic buildings, trails, the river landscape or local cuisine – without limiting your stay to just one type of travel.
