Pofi: Castle History, Museums and Regional Cuisine

Pofi lies on the summit of a hill considered to be an extinct volcano. This location combines castle history, sacred architecture, archaeology and regional festival culture. The Castello Baronale was restored around 1300 by Filippo Colonna. The Palazzo baronale dei Colonna is a reconstruction of large parts of the old castle. The Porta del Melangolo is one of Pofi’s historic entrances to the old town. The Torre dell’Orologio completes the historic scene: the Romanesque tower is 36 metres high and was converted into a bell tower.

Chiesa Santa Maria Maggiore

The first documented mention of the Chiesa Santa Maria Maggiore dates from 1108; at that time, it stood within the castle fortifications. Today, the church has a central floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross and six chapels. It is regarded as an expression of the 18th century without Baroque excess. Together with the castle buildings, it conveys an impression of Pofi’s historical development.

Prehistoric Traces in the Museums

The Museo Preistorico di Pofi presents evidence of prehistoric humans in inland southern Lazio. The exhibition tour extends back to the Neolithic period. The museum preserves the skull of the Uomo di Ceprano, discovered in 1994 and also known as “Argil”. The Museo di Pofi displays human remains from Cava Pompi, attributed to the Uomo di Pofi and dated to between 400,000 and 350,000 years ago. The Museo Preistorico di Pofi is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Festivals and Cuisine from Pofi

In Pofi, stracciatella in brodo is part of the Christmas menu; in the past, the soup was also served at wedding banquets and at Easter. The festival calendar adds further highlights: the Festa dei Fiori takes place on the last Sunday in April. Sapori d’Autunno is celebrated over two days in November and includes typical dishes, dances and folk songs. The Sagra della Pizza Fritta takes place at the beginning of August. For pizza fritta pofana, a dough made from lukewarm water and flour is prepared and then fried in oil. During Carnival, spiral-shaped frappe are made from eggs, sugar and flour and are also fried.
