Culture and History in the Cityscape
The Roman amphitheatre of Frosinone was built between the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 2nd century AD. The visible remains include the opus caementicium supporting chambers on the south-western side of the cavea. At this site, therefore, you will encounter not only an ancient structure but also a specific architectural detail of its surviving substance.
The Palazzo del Governo houses furnishings from the Reggia di Caserta. The Chiesa di San Benedetto is one of the few churches in Frosinone to have survived the bombings of the Second World War. The exterior of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta was inspired by the Basilica di Sant’Andrea della Valle in Rome.
Today’s Piazza Garibaldi has, with some probability, been identified as the ancient forum of Frùsino. Piazza Vittorio Veneto is a viewpoint over the Sacco plain and the Ciociaria region. The campanile is a Romanesque tower with a square ground plan, three rows of biforate windows on all four sides, a clock and a height of 40 metres.
Religious traditions also shape the city. The Santuario della Madonna della Neve is associated with a traditional account of a miracle in 1685, when the Madonna’s face in an image began to sweat white drops. The story is therefore one of the distinctive historical and religious connections that you can discover in Frosinone.
Parks, Walking Routes and Practical Orientation
The historic footpath in Parco San Francesco has been restored and connects Viale Mazzini directly and safely with the historic centre of Frosinone. Parco San Francesco also has a play area for children. The Sentiero dei Funari runs through Parco delle Colline; it is a path formerly used by rope makers to reach the area where ropes were produced.
Villa Comunale is a public park with an area equipped for sports and fitness activities, as well as a playground with recreational, health, cultural, environmental and natural functions. The Museo Archeologico di Frosinone offers the opportunity to visit the exhibition rooms, take guided tours and attend museum education programmes for schools, families and groups during their leisure time.
For travel within the city, the Frosinone Centro service combines a regional train journey to Frosinone railway station with a bus ride to the historic centre. This connection is a distinct part of local orientation and complements the historic routes and squares with a documented way of linking the railway station and the centre.
Festivals and Flavours from Frosinone
The Carnevale Storico Frusinate and the Festa della Radeca are officially recognised by the Ministry of Culture as a Historic Carnival. The Festa della Radeca is Frosinone’s carnival tradition and derives its significance from the memory of the uprising of the people of Frosinone against the French occupying forces in 1798 and 1799.
Every July, Frosinone hosts the Festival Nazionale ed Europeo dei Conservatori Italiani; during the festival, public performances are offered in Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
