Fortresses, Churches and Local History

The Castello Angioino-Aragonese consists of two parts built in different periods: the lower one is Angevin, while the upper one is Aragonese. Its history can be traced back to the 12th century, when Frederick II of Swabia had fortifications built in Gaeta.

The Montagna Spaccata, a promontory of Gaeta, has three rock fissures and a visitor trail. The Santuario della SS. TrinitĂ  was built there in the 11th century; the Via Crucis features maiolica panels from 1849 with verses by Metastasio.

The Santuario della SS. Annunziata is an example of Baroque architecture and was restored in 1621. It includes the 14th-century Cappella dell’Immacolata, also known as the Grotta d’Oro. The Museo Archeologico displays Roman finds as well as fragments of medieval architecture and ceramics.

The Duomo di Gaeta is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta in cielo and was built in the 10th to 11th centuries. Its 57-metre-high bell tower is built in the Arab-Norman style. The Chiesa di San Giovanni is also known as San Giuseppe and was built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries outside the city walls, in the Byzantine style with a Latin cross layout.

Monte Orlando and Trails through the Landscape

Monte Orlando is a protected natural area in the municipality of Gaeta and covers about three quarters of the town’s promontory. It includes cliffs, geological faults, red earth and caves such as the Grotta del Turco, as well as Roman archaeological remains and Bourbon military installations.

The Sentiero delle falesie runs through holm oak and pine forests and along low Mediterranean maquis. In the Monte Orlando area, it leads to Bourbon military powder magazines. The Sentiero ornitologico offers a viewpoint over the Gulf of Gaeta, the medieval town and its Aragonese and Angevin castles.

Serapo and Maritime Experiences

Spiaggia di Serapo is 1.5 kilometres long and up to 70 metres wide at its broadest points. Diving is possible in the sea off the cliffs of Monte Orlando, where you can observe numerous species on the seabed.

Nave di Serapo is an area of marine biodiversity with species-rich seabeds suitable for freediving and snorkelling. From the shore, you can reach it by swimming or on foot from the nearby Fontania beach.

A Local New Year’s Eve Tradition

On 31 December, the Sciuscio tradition continues in Gaeta’s oldest streets. Gliu sciusce are travelling orchestras made up of children, young people and adults who sing songs of good wishes in the streets and homes.

When choosing a hotel in Gaeta, you can weigh up different priorities: historic buildings and local culture, nature trails and viewpoints, or the beach, seabed and maritime activities. The right location depends on the experience you want to place at the centre of your trip.
