Historic Centre and Religious Art
The historic centre of Lenola, shaped by its medieval character, is defined by a fortification wall and several towers. The fortifications extend for around 400 metres and include tall tower houses with square or round floor plans; one tower is still integrated into today’s town hall.
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista has been documented since 1299 and was a parish church until 1574. It also contains a significant fresco from the late 1460s. The Chiesa Parocchiale di Santa Maria Maggiore was built in the first half of the 15th century. The Castrum Ambrifi and the Castelliere di Monte Passignano are among Lenola’s noteworthy monuments.
Basilica and Scalinata della Pace
The Basilica Santuario Madonna del Colle was consecrated on 8 September 1610. The basilica contains a painting of the Virgin Mary from the 18th century. This gives the sacred building a connection to a long religious and artistic history.
The Scalinata della Pace leads from Piazza Cavour to the forecourt of the Basilica Santuario Madonna del Colle. The staircase has 110 steps, 83 of which are decorated with mosaics on the theme of peace. The designs were created by artists from around the world and realised by the French master Bruno Amman.
Monte Appiolo and Trails in the Aurunci Mountains
The entire Monte Appiolo area lies within Parco Naturale Monti Aurunci. From the summit of Monte Appiolo, the view extends over Lenola, the plain of Fondi with Lago di Fondi, the Pontine Islands and the snow-covered mountains of Abruzzo.
Parco Naturale dei Monti Aurunci has freely accessible trails and mountain huts for hikers who wish to explore the protected areas of the Aurunci Mountains. Route CAI 918b – Le Crocette – Rifugio Appiolo begins in Località Camposerianni in Lenola, at a car park along the road.
Festival, Olive Oil and Getting There
The Festa della Madonna del Colle takes place from 5 September to 15 September. On 15 September, it reaches its climax with a procession of pilgrim groups through Lenola and an artistic torchlight display. Lenola also has excellent olive oil production.
