Maenza between local history and expansive landscapes
Maenza is situated on a hill. On clear days, the islands of Ponza, Palmarola and Zannone can be seen from there. From the windows of Piazza Coperta, the view stretches across the Amaseno Valley and the Pontine Plain to the sea and the Pontine Islands. Piazza Coperta itself is a medieval, two-storey marketplace at the main entrance to Maenza’s historic centre. This place therefore combines historic architecture with a vast, open landscape panorama.

Churches and medieval traces
San Giacomo is considered the oldest church in Maenza. The church has an 18th-century appearance and preserves a late Gothic portal from the earlier building. The medieval Fortezza di Monte Acuto lies between the western and eastern parts of the Monti Lepini and served as a watch post for the estates of the Counts De Ceccano. These two structures reveal different layers of local and regional history.
Hiking in the Monti Lepini
A hiking trail begins near the rural chapel of S. Luca in the M. Acuto district of Maenza and leads to the summit of Monte Calvello. Along the route from Monte Acuto to Monte Calvello, the vegetation changes from beech and hornbeam stands to Mediterranean maquis with holm oak forests. The mountain landscape of the Monti Lepini is not a uniform backdrop, but features a variety of forest and vegetation types.
The municipal area also offers a specific point of interest for those interested in natural history. The subspecies Sciurus vulgaris italicus occurs in the Monti Lepini, including in the municipal area of Maenza. Festivals with a local character
The celebration of Saint Anthony the Great includes the blessing of bread and animals, especially pets, in the adjoining square. Participants are offered traditional hot chocolate prepared according to an old recipe. In connection with the festival, the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate was opened to the public on 17 January. The Folklore Internazionale festival is also held on the third Sunday in July. These dates and customs add their own accents alongside the quieter exploration of churches, squares and mountain landscapes.
