Museums Between Antiquity and More Recent History

The Museo Civico Archeologico presents material evidence of ancient Anzio from its beginnings through the imperial era. The collections also include mosaics and frescoes from the imperial villa known as the Villa di Nerone. The Teatro Romano has a cavea supported by radial wedges made of mixed masonry. A ring-shaped central passage leads through a barrel-vaulted section and has side entrances to the orchestra area. After the theater was abandoned, its vaulted corridors were occupied in late antiquity by at least three kilns for producing terracotta items. The site therefore preserves several successive uses in one location.

The Vallo Volsco also preserves traces of Anzio’s earliest fortifications. These include the worked sandstone wall on the western side, sections of wall made of sandstone blocks on the northern side, and deep defensive cuts on the eastern side. These visible architectural elements complement the museum perspective with tangible traces in the historic terrain.

The Paradiso sul Mare was built between 1919 and 1924 to a design by Cesare Bazzani. The building is currently closed to the public due to upcoming restoration work.
