Subiaco: Monasteries, Medieval Streets and Monte Livata

Subiaco is a destination for travellers who want to combine historic sites, nature and active experiences during their trip to Italy. The Santa Scolastica monastery was founded in 520 AD. Its library and museum preserve more than 10,000 manuscripts and early printed works. The Villa di Nerone is another point of interest: the Nucleo A area comprises around twenty rooms with thermal and probably also residential uses, a cistern and an elliptical fish-breeding pond. At the Sacro Speco, Saint Benedict lived for three years in an inaccessible mountain cave.

The Borgo Medievale degli Opifici is considered Subiaco’s oldest and most characteristic district and is particularly defining for the town. Narrow, winding streets and small squares shape its appearance. Another historic stop is the Ponte San Francesco. It is a well-preserved, fortified medieval bridge built by Abbot Ademaro in 1358. Together, these structures reveal different sides of the town’s history: the small-scale fabric of the Borgo and a single structure with a clearly documented construction date.

Nature and Winter Sports on Monte Livata

Subiaco is located in the Parco Naturale dei Monti Simbruini. On Monte Livata in the municipality of Subiaco, the landscape at an altitude of around 1,400 metres is home to a ski area divided into two sections and surrounded by beech forests. The Campo dell’Osso ski area offers downhill runs for all ability levels, cross-country skiing and snowshoe hikes.

Rafting and Seasonal Experiences

From spring to autumn, the Centro Sport Fluviali di Subiaco organises guided rafting trips with experienced guides. This allows different interests to be taken into account when planning a trip, without reducing Subiaco to just one type of holiday.

Festivals and Travel from Rome

The events calendar also has its own highlights: the Palio di San Lorenzo takes place on 10 August, while the Festival dei Cortei storici Borgiani is held in September. From Rome, Subiaco can be reached via the Vicovaro-Mandela exit of the A24 and then along the SS 5 Tiburtina.
