Cineto Romano – Castle, Waterfalls and Religious Festivals
Castle and Local History
Cineto Romano lies above the valley of the Torrente Ferrata and is surrounded by olive groves, meadows, forests rich in wildlife, and numerous watercourses. The historic part is centered around the Castello degli Orsini. Castello Orsini is a baronial castle built in the 11th century, with embrasures and Ghibelline battlements. In Cineto Romano, landscape and local history therefore come together directly.
When choosing a hotel in Cineto Romano, you can weigh the town’s main attractions against one another: culture, nature, hiking, access, and seasonal events.
Art, Churches and Archaeology
The Church of San Giovanni Battista houses a painting by Vincenzo Manenti depicting Saint John the Baptist in the desert. Outside the town area lies Santa Maria delle Grazie, which currently consists of a small single-nave church. The Pozzo delle Morge was designated in the 16th century as a prison for capital offenses. La Spiaggia is an archaeological site in Cineto Romano; the Roman post station „ad Lamnas“ once stood there.
Gorges and Waterfalls
The Cascate di Rioscuro consist of several waterfalls formed by the Rioscuro River within a gorge. The protected natural monument Torrente Rioscuro lies in a deep river gorge along the Sentiero Coleman between the Monti Lucretili and the Monti Simbruini. A hiking trail leads to the Cascate di Rioscuro.
The Sentiero Coleman
The Sentiero Coleman was established by the Monti Simbruini and Monti Lucretili parks in memory of a four-day hike undertaken by Enrico Coleman and Edoardo Martinori in 1881. The Camerata Nuova–Cineto Romano stage connects the Monti Simbruini with the Monti Lucretili and offers sweeping views toward Terminillo and Velino.
How to Reach Cineto Romano
Cineto Romano can be reached via the A24 dei Parchi motorway and the Vicovaro–Mandela exit. The Roma–Pescara railway line provides access to Cineto Romano via Mandela-Sambuci station.
Festivals and Religious Customs
San Rocco is honored every year on August 16 with a religious celebration. This includes a solemn procession in which the statue is carried through the streets of the town. A public auction in the Piazza determines the next Festarolo, who keeps the statue for one year and organizes the celebrations. Cineto Romano commemorates Sant’Antonio on June 13. The celebration ends with a solemn procession that carries the saint’s blessing to the town’s homes. The annual grain-blessing rite takes place on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption and includes bundles of sheaves decorated with colored ribbons.
The Year and Local Cuisine
A polenta event takes place in Cineto Romano between February and March. An event dedicated to Sagne di Farro is held between June and August.
A Planned Resort on Colle delle Cisterne
In 1899, a project was proposed to create a resort with comfortable villas on Colle delle Cisterne.
