Discover Pisciarelli: Church, Trails and Aqueduct

Pisciarelli combines religious art, historical traces and trails through the landscape. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo on Piazza San Lorenzo, the Sentiero CAI 262A–262 beneath the Archi di Boccalupo and the remains of the Trajanic Aqueduct offer different points of connection to the area.

Church and Art in Pisciarelli

The present-day Chiesa di San Lorenzo is located on Piazza San Lorenzo in Pisciarelli. It dates from the 18th century and has a single-nave layout with four side chapels featuring round apses. The apse contains a fresco created by Vincenzo Strigelli in 1745. It depicts the Assumption of Mary as well as Saints Lorenzo and Francesco.

The earlier church history includes the original church of Pisciarelli. It was dedicated to Saint Peter and built around 1550 on the initiative of Paolo Giordano Orsini. A high-quality 16th-century panel painting from the Chiesa di San Lorenzo is attributed to Pedro Fernandez di Murcia. It is now housed in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di Bracciano. The traces of local art therefore lead not only to Piazza San Lorenzo, but also to Bracciano.

Hiking Trails Between the Village and Surrounding Area

The Sentiero CAI 262A–262 starts on Via di Pisciarelli, passes through the village and then runs beneath the Archi di Boccalupo. The Sentiero 262 also connects Piazza Tittoni in Manziana with the village of Pisciarelli in Bracciano.

Particular caution is required on the Sentiero 262 on downhill sections, as the trail is also used by hikers and riders.

Mountain Biking Excursions and Their Dates

The “Gerico sul lago” mountain biking excursions include routes to the Bosco di Santo Celso and Pisciarelli. They are scheduled from April to September on the first Saturday of each month. Participants must bring their own mountain bike; helmets are compulsory.

Waterworks and Early Local History

The original source, the caput aquae of the Trajanic Aqueduct, lies in the Fossa Renara conduits in the hamlet of Pisciarelli in Bracciano. A section of the aqueduct built by Trajan in 109 AD can be identified in the area. The Latin term caput aquae refers to the source of a waterworks structure.

The ruins of the ancient settlement “Ad Pisces” gave the area of Pisciarelli its name.

Patron Saint’s Festival and Local Specialty

The Festa di San Lorenzo is celebrated in Pisciarelli as the patron saint’s festival. The feast day of S. Lorenzo Martire in Pisciarelli is the first Sunday in August. Culinary specialties include the typical Pizzette di San Lorenzo.
