Marcellina: Between Mountain Landscapes and Local Culture

Marcellina combines nature experiences in the Monti Lucretili with a remarkable rural history, church art and traditional festivals.

Mountain Landscapes and Special Habitats

Marcellina lies within the Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Lucretili and on the edge of the foothill zone of the Monte Gennaro group. A steep gradient leads over a short distance to ridgelines at just over 1,000 m above sea level. At the southern edge of the protected area, there are particularly interesting forest formations and plant communities. The occasional presence of the wolf (Canis lupus) has also been recorded in the areas of the park furthest removed from human disturbance.

A striking landscape feature is the deep, steep-sided ravine of Scarpellata. It provides access to distinctly mountainous habitats that directly adjoin the areas of the Monte Gennaro group described above.

Hiking between Marcellina and Tivoli

The Sentiero Marcellina–Tivoli bears trail marker 336A and is classified as EE+ for particularly experienced hikers. At the same time, it is a hike of approximately four hours from Marcellina to Tivoli. This makes it possible to experience the landscape not only as a panorama, but also as a demanding connection between two towns.

The trailhead can be reached directly at the visitor center of the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lucretili, just outside Marcellina on the provincial road to San Polo. It is located 200 m before the turnoff to Prato Favale.

Church Art and Traces of History

In the center of Marcellina, the Criptoportico is an example of how present-day rural homes overlap with the remains of Roman rural residential buildings. In the Church of S. Maria delle Grazie, the main altar displays a restored painting of the Madonna delle Grazie from the 12th century. The fresco decoration in the same church was restored in 1977 and is an important document of medieval painting in Lazio.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Festa di Sant’Antonio Abate takes place on the first Sunday after January 17. The Festa della Madonna delle Grazie is celebrated on the last Sunday in May; during this celebration, the sacred image is carried through the town’s streets by oxen. From the end of May to the beginning of June, the Festa della Madonna della Ginestra also takes place. These dates give local life a clear seasonal rhythm.

Local Specialties and Olive Oil

The Sagra della Coppietta accompanies the celebrations from the end of May to the beginning of June and includes a tasting of the traditional dried meat specialty. In the Sabina Romana area, which is associated with Marcellina, Olio EVO Sabina DOP is produced. The Sagra dell’Olio takes place in Marcellina in November. Nature, festival culture and regional products thus come together in a way that also makes the town interesting from a culinary perspective.
