Ponzano Romano: Churches, Tiber Views and Local Festivals

Ponzano Romano combines historic churches, a distinctive meander of the Tiber and festivals with unique local traditions. Sant’Andrea in Flumine was founded in the 6th century on pre-existing Roman ruins; Carlomanno had the monastery built in the 8th century. Inside the church are frescoes, granite columns with Ionic and Corinthian capitals, and a Cosmatesque pavement. The most recent restorations of Sant’Andrea in Flumine were completed in 2004.

Another cultural highlight is San Nicola di Bari in Ponzano Romano. The preserved bell tower dates from the 16th century, as do the paintings inside.

Tiber Landscape and Views

At Ponzano, the Tiber forms a distinctive meander known as “Fiasco.” Behind the Palazzo Abbaziale, a viewpoint offers views of the Tiber Valley and its meanders. This adds a landscape perspective to the way you experience the town: alongside individual buildings, the course of the river is also a defining feature. The Festa della Natività di Maria Santissima takes place in Ponzano Romano on September 8. The Festa della Zitella includes a procession in honor of a “zitella,” meaning a single woman selected by drawing lots. As part of the patronal festival on December 7 and 8, the Sagra della Bruschetta follows the Festa della Zitella.

The Ciambella of Ponzano Romano, also called Ciambella di San Sebastiano, is another part of the local identity. It is a traditional food specialty from Lazio.
