History and Art in the Town Center

Rocca di Papa combines historical landmarks with unusual places to visit. Above the historic center lies the Museo Geofisico next to the Antica Fortezza Colonna. It is housed in the Osservatorio Geodinamico, which Michele Stefano De Rossi had built in 1886.

The Fortezza Medievale degli Annibaldi is located at the Campi d’Annibale. The Percorso dei Murales leads through the alleys of the old town center, featuring murals by local painters and artists. Guided tours present these murals as an open-air art gallery. The churches also tell the story of the town’s development: in 1739, Corrado Giaquinto painted the altarpiece “Assunzione della Vergine” for the parish church of Rocca di Papa. Construction work on Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo began in 1664 to replace the 12th-century church of del Crocifisso, whose size was no longer sufficient for the growing number of worshippers.

Via Sacra and Monte Cavo

The Via Sacra dates back to the 7th century BC and led to the Temple of Jupiter Latiaris on Monte Cavo. Along the route, lateral crepidines made of peperino stone are still visible. The Via Sacra can also be reached from Campi d’Annibale at Piazza di Vittorio. This makes it possible to combine a visit to historic landscape features with an exploration of the surrounding area without losing sight of the route’s ancient significance.

Starry Skies and Knowledge of the Earth

The “Livio Gratton” Astronomical Park is located in the Vivaro district of Rocca di Papa, one of the darkest places in the Castelli Romani for astronomical observations. The observatory has telescopes for nighttime and solar observations. Its offerings include planetarium visits, evenings featuring astronomical observations and guided walks. AstroIncontri combine guided tours with observing the sky with the naked eye and through a telescope.

The Museo Geofisico explains scientific models of the Earth’s interior and, with the help of an expert, provides new insights into the Earth and the planets. The Santuario della Madonna del Tufo was built at the beginning of the 16th century to commemorate a miracle that took place in the Middle Ages.

Landscape and Local Specialties

The Pratoni del Vivaro form a green valley area used for picnics, cycling tours and horseback riding. From the Occhialone viewpoint, you can see both volcanic lakes, Nemi and Albano, as well as the sea beyond them. The view and the broad valley area give excursions in Rocca di Papa different focuses, ranging from landscape and activity to peaceful relaxation.

The Rocchicianella, a small, sweet-tasting chestnut, is part of the area’s local character. A festival is dedicated to it every year on the third Sunday in October. The Ciambella degli Sposi is an old artisanal product and is now recognized as a traditional agri-food product of Lazio, or PAT for short.
