Vitinia: Nature Trail, Protected Areas and Historical Traces

Vitinia combines nature trails, protected areas and historical traces. The Sentiero Trilussa begins directly in Vitinia, while its route touches several protected areas. The Sentiero Trilussa: Starting Point and Trail Characteristics

The Sentiero Trilussa begins in Vitinia at the corner of Via del Risaro and Via Massa Fiscaglia. It is approximately 7 km long. An unpaved section runs along the Fosso di Malafede. The approximate length is suitable for a rough estimate of a hike, while the unpaved section describes the condition of part of the route. For a hike, this means that particular consideration should be given to the surface of one section, rather than making a blanket statement about the entire route.

The Sentiero Trilussa crosses or skirts three protected areas: the Riserva Litorale Romano, the Riserva Tenuta presidenziale di Castelporziano and the Parco Regionale di Decima Malafede. In addition, the Riserva Naturale Decima Malafede is the largest protected area in the park system managed by RomaNatura. The landscape around Vitinia also has a geological dimension: sedimentary hills feature outcrops exposed by quarries, with fossils and stone tools. “Outcrops” refers to visibly exposed areas of rock. Thus, visible traces of geological and human history complement the nature trail. This allows the natural environment, geological traces and historical destinations to be considered alongside one another when planning a trip, without blurring the differences between them.

Church and Ancient Sites

In Vitinia, the parish church of Sacro Cuore di Gesù Agonizzante adds an ecclesiastical-historical aspect to the landscape connection. On February 25, 1990, Pope John Paul II gave a homily there. The church was designed by Ildo Avetta. The ancient site of Theater of Ostia and the ancient site of Villa of Maxentius are also located in the vicinity of Vitinia.
