Arlena di Castro: Tuff Plateau, Etruscan Tombs and Castle Ruins

Arlena di Castro is situated on a tuff plateau at the foot of the Monti Cimini in a hilly landscape. The town combines Etruscan traces, religious buildings shaped by the Middle Ages and the early modern period, castle ruins and agricultural specialities. Etruscan Traces amid Tuff Stone and Roadside Countryside

At La Piantata, in the immediate vicinity of the Arlena-Piansano provincial road, there is an underground Etruscan chamber tomb with painted decoration and an onomastic inscription. Based on its architectural and decorative features, which have parallels with the painted tombs of Tarquinia, the tomb is dated to the last quarter of the 4th century BC. The combination of tuff stone, tomb architecture and painted furnishings makes this site interesting for travellers who want to understand historical evidence not only through museums, but also in connection with the landscape.

In Località Ararella near Arlena di Castro, along the Strada Provinciale Caninese, there are further Etruscan tombs with burial chambers carved into the tuff stone. These were originally covered with protective roof tiles. Churches with a Long Building History

The town's churches also span several centuries. The Church of San Rocco was founded around 1460. The present building of the parish church of San Giovanni was created in the 18th century by remodelling a structure built in the late 16th century.

Castle Ruins on the Tuff Spur

The castle ruins of Arlena di Castro preserve distinctive architectural details. Their walls are 1.30 metres thick. On the northern side, three windows are still visible; they are widely splayed on the inside and narrow to slit-like openings on the outside. The walls follow the outline of the tuff spur on which the settlement was founded. In 1630, the castle ruins were referred to as „Roccaccia di sopra“; the derogatory name referred to the dilapidated condition of the complex. The combination of defensive architecture, tuff relief and settlement history provides a particularly vivid focus for exploring the town.

Regional Products and Local Events

Agriculture is also part of the local character. The Green Asparagus of Canino, with the protected geographical indication IGP, is grown in the Arlena di Castro area. Extra virgin olive oil from Canino, with the protected designation of origin DOP, is also grown and produced in the area. Both products anchor Arlena di Castro in the regional food culture and complement the cultural and historical themes with an agricultural perspective.

The San Rocco patronal festival takes place every year on 16 August. Events in Arlena di Castro also include historical re-enactments during Holy Week.
