Bagnaia: Piazza, Pilgrimage Route and Italian Local History

Bagnaia combines a history dating back to the year 963 with its location along the Via Francigena between the Monti Cimini. At that time, the place was known as Bangaria. The year 963 is clearly much earlier than the redesign of the borgo by Ghinucci in 1576.

A Borgo with an Urban Design Profile

In 1576, the architect Tommaso Ghinucci redesigned the borgo of Bagnaia with an elegant urban layout. This design is particularly evident in Piazza XX Settembre. The square is inspired by Piazza del Popolo in Rome and decorated with papal and cardinal coats of arms. This gives the piazza a clear connection to the newly redesigned centre of the town.

The Torre del Borgo o dell’Orologio is also part of the townscape. The round tower rises above the Palazzo della Loggia and the entire borgo of Bagnaia.

Gardens and Cultural Sites in the Surrounding Area

Villa Lante in Bagnaia comprises eighteen hectares of parkland and formal garden. Alongside the squares and layout of the borgo, the park and formal garden add a landscaped setting. At Villa Lante, the focus therefore shifts from an individual square to an extensive garden complex. This change from the space of the square to the garden complex can be taken into account when planning a cultural and historical visit for the day. The square and the garden complex represent different forms of design within Bagnaia.

The Palazzo Ducale o delle Logge, a palace, is located in the immediate vicinity of Bagnaia. The Museo Civico Viterbo and the Etrurian National Musem - Rocca Albornoz are also located nearby; both are museums. Those interested in cultural history can thus extend their view beyond the borgo to three different sites in the surrounding area. The palace and museums represent different types of buildings in the immediate vicinity.

Pilgrimage Route and Traditional Celebrations

A distinct religious emphasis is placed on the traditional celebrations in honour of Saint Anthony the Abbot, scheduled for 16 and 17 January. They include the lighting of the Sacro Fuoco. Anyone planning around this date is explicitly arranging their visit for two days in January. The lighting of the Sacro Fuoco adds a specific custom to the celebration.

Orientation and Local Mobility

Bus connections are part of the local infrastructure. The buses of Francigena S.r.l. serve Bagnaia as well as the other hamlets of the municipality of Viterbo. In addition, bus route 6 connects Bagnaia with Piazza XX Settembre. Local route planning therefore needs to take into account both the services offered by Francigena S.r.l. within the municipality and the specific connection to the piazza. The network thus extends beyond Bagnaia to the other hamlets of the municipality of Viterbo, while route 6 names the square as the specific destination of the connection.
