Celleno and Ferento: Traces of History

The historic center of Celleno lies on a tuff hill. Ferento is an ancient site in the area around Cava.

Tuff and Narrow Streets in Celleno Vecchio

Tuff appears in Celleno in two specific forms: as the tuff hill of Celleno’s historic center and as a reddish building material in Celleno Vecchio. Celleno Vecchio consists largely of houses made of reddish tuff and narrow streets. The reddish stone is therefore part of the visible design of the houses, while the narrow passageways define the built space. When visiting on foot, facades and streets thus stand directly alongside each other in Celleno Vecchio.

Castle and Bridge

An imposing castle stands in the historic center of Celleno, accessible via an impressive single-arch bridge made of original stones. The entrance is therefore itself a distinctive architectural feature: the bridge leads to the castle in a single arch, and its original stones are part of its actual construction.

Il Convento, San Rocco and Madonna della Cava

Il Convento, a complex dating from 1610, is located at the entrance to Celleno Vecchio. The Church of San Rocco in Celleno contains a wooden crucifix created between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The two dates belong to different historical periods: Il Convento dates from 1610, while the crucifix has a significantly earlier date.

Archaic tombs were discovered in the locality of Madonna della Cava on the western access ridge to Celleno. Several centuries lie between the year 1610 associated with Il Convento and the dating of the wooden crucifix. The archaic tombs extend this chronological horizon with an archaeological find.

The Acquaforte Trail above the Valle dei Calanchi

The Acquaforte Trail passes through agricultural areas and along unpaved paths to small viewpoints above the Valle dei Calanchi. If you plan to take this trail, the unpaved surface is a practical consideration when orienting yourself during your outing. When preparing for your outing on the Acquaforte Trail, choosing suitable footwear therefore has practical importance on site.

Cherry Festival and Maraschino di Celleno

The Celleno Cherry Festival reached its 37th edition. Maraschino di Celleno is a traditional product made from marasche, visciole and spices. The cherry therefore has two different contexts in Celleno: the festival marks a recurring cultural occasion, while the Maraschino combines the two fruit names with spices. The name Maraschino di Celleno explicitly retains Celleno in the product name.
