Vignanello: Wine Tradition, Castles and Underground Passages

Vignanello is a destination for travelers interested in exploring both wine tradition and architectural history. The Festa del Vino was already being held in the early 1970s; its sixth edition took place in 1975. It began as a community celebration of the grape harvest and Vignanello’s wine identity. In this way, the town’s history is connected with a regional culture that is also reflected in local specialties.

Wine Tradition and Local Specialties

This culinary heritage includes Pamparito di Vignanello. The bread has been included in the national register of historic Italian breads and in the Ark of Taste. It is prepared with raw materials from the region according to an old recipe passed down from generation to generation. Together with the Festa del Vino, Pamparito represents the connection between the grape harvest, regional ingredients and traditional forms of food culture.

Porta del Molesino and Castello Ruspoli

The Porta del Molesino is also known as Porta del Vignola and was built in 1692. It is the work of the Roman architect Mattia de Rossi, who lived from 1637 to 1695. Castello Ruspoli is a castle in the vicinity of Vignanello. The present-day Castello Ruspoli in Vignanello was reconstructed between 1531 and 1538 at the behest of Count Sforza Marescotti, based on a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.

Gardens and Connutti

The gardens of Ottavia Orsini were laid out behind Castello Ruspoli in 1611. To this day, they have preserved almost unchanged the original layout established by Ottavia Orsini. Another historic structure is formed by the Connutti, the local term for underground passages. They follow a main route from the Valle della Cupa southwest of the town center toward Castello Ruspoli, approximately from west to east.

The Etruscans primarily used the Connutti to collect water from underground groundwater sources, transport it or draw it from wells. Tours of the Connutti were scheduled for Sundays and public holidays. Their spatial orientation and water-related function make them a distinctive gateway to Vignanello’s earlier history, without equating the underground passages with the above-ground castles and gardens.

Historic Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The Palazzo Chigi, a palace, is also located in the area around Vignanello. The Castello Orsini di Vasanello, a castle, is likewise nearby. Together with Castello Ruspoli, these sites represent different types of historic buildings: the palace and castles stand alongside the Porta del Molesino, the gardens of Ottavia Orsini and the Connutti as further specific points of interest.

Exploring Vignanello by Interest

In Vignanello, wine and food culture exist alongside architectural history. The Festa del Vino and Pamparito di Vignanello lead visitors to the town’s wine and food culture. Porta del Molesino, Castello Ruspoli, Palazzo Chigi and Castello Orsini di Vasanello turn attention to architectural history and historic building types. The gardens of Ottavia Orsini complement this focus with an almost unchanged layout, while the Connutti illustrate the Etruscan use of underground waterways.
