Civitella Dʼagliano between History and Culinary Delights
The historic centre is characterised by medieval architecture. Civitella d’Agliano combines this historic centre with art, events, olive oil and wine. The centre therefore brings together medieval architectural history, cultural events and regional products.
Churches, Piazzetta and Rocca
The Chiesa del Conventino is located outside the built-up town centre and dates back to the 15th century. The original construction of the Parrocchia dei SS. Pietro e Callisto is dated to the period between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The central Piazzetta is lined by the Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie and the ancient Parrocchia dei SS. Pietro e Callisto. The Rocca Monaldeschi complex dates back to the 13th century and served as a fortification and observation post. The Rocca Monaldeschi and its tower are landmarks of Civitella d’Agliano. The churches on the Piazzetta and the Conventino outside the centre mark different points within the town area. The dates therefore range from the late 12th to the 15th century. The townscape consequently brings together buildings from the late 12th, 13th and 15th centuries.
Spatial Orientation in the Town Centre
Five narrow lanes radiate out from the central Piazzetta of Civitella d’Agliano. The Piazzetta therefore provides a specific reference point for orienting yourself in the historic centre. The Chiesa del Conventino, on the other hand, is located outside the built-up town centre.
Art and Traces of Early Settlements
In the Civitella d’Agliano area, the Giardino d’arte La Serpara contains more than thirty sculptures and installations. Graves, dovecotes, remains of Roman villas, fragments of columns and ceramic finds have also been discovered in the same area, bearing witness to early settlements. For those interested in culture, this means that works of art and traces of early settlements can be found within the same geographical area.
Events Throughout the Year
Several events take place throughout the year. The traditional Nelle Terre del Grechetto event takes place on the last weekend of July. The Sagra della Birra e della Pizza takes place in August. Events expected in September include the Festival del Vino e della Musica and the Festa del Patrono San Gorgonio Martire. The dates range from the last weekend of July through August to the events expected in September. Those wishing to plan their stay around wine, music or local festivals can consider these periods separately.
Olive Oil and Wines from Civitella Dʼagliano
The Civitella d’Agliano area is rich in olive groves. Local olive oil can be tasted in Civitella d’Agliano. The recommended tasting selection includes the white, rosé and red wines of the Civitella d’Agliano IGT designation. Alongside olive oil, the wines of the area’s own designation are therefore also local tasting highlights.
