Bargone: Historic Village Center, Festivals and Rural Paths

Bargone combines an almost intact historic village center with ecclesiastical traces, firmly established dates in the annual calendar and old paths through a rural landscape.

Historic Village Center and Casa Fracchia

The compact historic village center of Bargone is almost intact. Arched doorways, remnants of fortifications and stairways have been preserved. Casa Fracchia is a rural building from the 17th century with an adjoining garden.

Ecclesiastical Traces

The ecclesiastical history of Bargone extends back to a permanent reorganization in the 16th century. The older rectory of Santa Maria in Riparia and the rectory of San Martino in Bargone were permanently united in 1566. A statue is still located in the church of Bargone. Agostino Roscelli was born in Bargone in 1818 and founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.

Mausoleo Fracchia

The Mausoleo Fracchia is located near Bargone. Enrico Del Debbio built it on behalf of the wife of the late Umberto Fracchia to house his mortal remains.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The festivals in Bargone follow fixed dates and traditional procedures. On August 15, the Feast of the Assumption traditionally includes an afternoon procession; this is followed by an auction of goods and products from the local district. The Fragolata began in 1953 as a feast day for local farmers. It was dedicated to the most valuable and delicate fruit of their land; it takes place on the second weekend of July. The Christmas market in Bargone is an established tradition on December 8. The event, organized by the Comune di Casarza Ligure, includes more than 80 exhibitors. There are also handicraft products, hot chocolate, mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, fritters, children's entertainment and musical performances. For scheduling purposes, there are two summer dates and one winter date: the second weekend of July, August 15 and December 8. The August date combines the religious occasion with an auction of goods and products from the local district. The dedication of the Fragolata to the most valuable and delicate fruit of the land distinguishes it in content from the religious August festival. At the Christmas market, handicraft products, seasonal food and drinks are offered alongside children's entertainment and musical performances.

Old Paths and Natural Environment

Away from the festival dates, old paths near Bargone lead through a rural landscape with changing views and colors. In eastern Liguria, a lake is considered the oldest postglacial sediment deposit. A sediment deposit is a depositional site; postglacial refers to the period after the glaciers. Pillow basalts can result from submarine lava eruptions. The geological processes thus range from deposits formed after the Ice Age to the possible formation of rock from lava beneath the sea.
