Slate shapes Cicagna’s cultural identity

Cicagna combines local history, craftsmanship and regional culture in an unusually tangible way. The Museo dell'Ardesia di Cicagna provides an overview of the world of slate. The piffero appenninico, or Apennine pipe, is considered Cicagna’s historic principal instrument. Accompanied by an accordion and, in earlier times, also by the Apennine bagpipe known as the müsa, it was used for dancing and enlivened the festivals of the time. Nicolò Bacigalupo created the piffero di Cicagna.

The Festa Nostra Signora dei Miracoli in Cicagna is a religious celebration featuring vespers singing, a procession, fireworks and food stalls. It is connected with a tradition recounting a Marian miracle from 1537. Thus, religious celebration, inherited history and public festival culture come together in a specific event.

The cultural offerings also include Il Teatro della Val Fontabuona, with an auditorium seating 336 people. The Sagra della Castagna provides a different seasonal highlight: This traditional annual festival takes place in October, and visitors can sample local specialties made with chestnuts there.
