Coreglia Ligure between hiking trails, churches and panoramic views

Coreglia Ligure lies at the foot of 774-metre-high Monte Pegge. The sunnier slopes are covered with olive trees and vineyards, while the road to Passo della Crocetta climbs between terraces, gardens and orchards. The village therefore presents a landscape of hillside areas, agricultural land and historic squares. Slopes, terraces and wide-ranging views

The road to Passo della Crocetta runs through a varied cultural landscape. The Cappella della Misericordia stands at the pass; from there, panoramic views extend across the Tigullio. The complex of the Chiesa di San Martino, with its forecourt, offers a different vantage point: from here you can look out over the valley below, particularly impressively at night. Together with the slopes of Monte Pegge, this creates a landscape in which paths, cultivated areas and elevated viewpoints lie close alongside one another.

Churches and historic traces

The Chiesa di San Nicolò di Bari stands in isolation on a hill above the former centre of Coreglia. Its history can be traced back to 22 May 1147; it was rebuilt in 1667. The Chiesa di S. Giacomo, a 17th-century church, is located on Via Canevale. Coreglia therefore brings together various traces of different historical periods, each connected to specific places and buildings.

The religious landmarks of Dezerega and Canevale are also part of the local landscape. The parish of San Martino in Dezerega has existed since the 12th century. San Giacomo in Canevale was re-established as an independent parish on 26 October 1622. In Canevale, a chapel was also built in 1882 on the remains of Chichizola’s house.

Hiking the Anello di Coreglia

The Anello di Coreglia is a 12-kilometre hiking trail with a clearly described route. It begins at Pian dei Manzi near the town hall and leads through Coreglia Ligure to the ridge at Passo di Coreglia. It then continues to the Santuario di Montallegro. The return route leads via Passo di Canevale, Canevale and Pian di Coreglia, as well as along the Sentiero Chichizola, back to Pian dei Manzi. This makes it possible to plan not only the distance but also the sequence of the individual sections of the route.

The “Giovanni Chichizola” trail is an important route to the Santuario di Montallegro from Fontanabuona through the village of Canevale. Alongside the Anello di Coreglia, the trail therefore provides its own link between the landscape, the village and the sanctuary.

A stage for cycling travellers

Coreglia Ligure is a stop along the Ciclovia dell'Ardesia. Those who do not want to focus their trip exclusively on hiking can therefore also consider the village in connection with this cycle route. The churches, agriculturally shaped slopes and viewpoints give Coreglia a character that combines cultural and landscape interests.
