Carasco Between Valley and River

Carasco is located in the lower Fontanabuona Valley, directly inland from Chiavari. At the same time, the town lies at the confluence of the Lavagna and Sturla streams. Rivarola lies at the foot of the hill rising in the Lavagna’s great loop. There, the Lavagna and Graveglia streams converge to form the Entella River. These landscape features make Carasco interesting for travellers who want to understand a place through its rivers, valleys and historic settlement areas.

Churches and Fortifications in the Hamlets

The Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta is located in the hamlet of Rivarola. Rivarola Castle, built in 1132, is also associated with Rivarola. The Rivarola Bastion was built in the 12th century by the Genoese in the heart of the Fieschi family’s possessions. Anyone interested in the history and architectural traces of Liguria’s hinterland will find several specific points of reference here within a narrowly defined local area.

The Church of San Pietro is located in the hamlet of San Pietro di Sturla. The Church of San Pellegrino is located in Carasco’s hamlet of Santa Maria di Sturla and is also known as the Church of Santa Maria di Sturla. In the hamlet of Graveglia stands the Church of Sant'Eufemiano, built by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio. Thus, alongside Rivarola, the other hamlets also stand out through their own ecclesiastical points of interest.

Activities and Open Spaces

The Circuito Kart di Carasco was built between 1998 and 1999. The track extends for 400 metres and features a series of bends with different radii. The Circuito Kart di Carasco also has a professional timing system. In Rivarola near Carasco, there is also an equestrian training centre affiliated with CONI. Structured courses at various levels, as well as show jumping and pony riding, are offered there. The range of specific activities therefore extends from motorised laps on the kart track to equestrian training and horse sports.

The municipality of Carasco has four public green spaces. Citizens may use them during opening hours. The following opening hours apply on public holidays for the Churches of San Pietro and San Pellegrino: Admission to the Church of San Pietro is free, and on public holidays it is open from 07:45 to 18:30. On public holidays, the Church of San Pellegrino is open from 08:45 to 18:30.
