Ne: Mining History, Gorges and Trails

Ne between Coast, Pastures and Geological History

Ne encompasses a range of landscapes extending from Mediterranean environments to pre-Alpine pastures. At the same time, the area’s exposed surface tells a geological story that predates today’s cultural landscape by far: it was formed when dinosaurs inhabited the Earth and was once the seabed of an ocean that has since disappeared. For you, this creates a destination where landscape and geological history are directly intertwined.

Mining and Historical Traces

The Miniera di Gambatesa is part of Ne’s history. It was Europe’s largest manganese mine and operated from 1876 to 2011; mining ceased in 2011. The Miniera di Gambatesa is currently closed until further notice. There is no ongoing mining operation there today. The museum route included a guided tour and a ride on the characteristic miners’ train, covering around one kilometre through the underground mine, followed by a walk through the geological, mineralogical and mining heritage.

The history extends into the landscape beyond mining as well. Roman remains came to light during archaeological excavations in the hamlet of Statale in Ne. Another distinctive destination is the Ponte di Nascio, a bridge built in the 18th century over a deep gorge carved by the Rio Novelli. It stands 20 metres above the gorge and offers a view of the spectacularly narrow, deeply incised ravine.

Forests and Different Trail Connections

The connection between settlement, forest and trail is evident on the largely unpaved road from Cassagna to Statale. It passes through impressive chestnut forests, complementing Ne’s range of landscapes. The route from Cassagna to Statale represents a distinct landscape connection within the municipality. For orientation purposes, the unpaved forest route and the connections to the trail network should therefore be distinguished. The trail network around Ne is also relevant to hikers in several directions: it is directly connected to the Ligurian Levante coast, as well as to the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, and extends as far as the Via Francigena.

A separate short route is the Anello del Monte Bossea loop. It starts and ends at the Miniera di Gambatesa, is easy, 5 km long and takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. The combination of distance and duration provides a clear time frame for this loop. The easy rating applies to the loop itself and not automatically to the other connections. This allows you to distinguish in your planning between this clearly defined loop and the more extensive trail connections, without combining the different routes into a single itinerary.

There is also an opportunity to enjoy the water in Ne: fishing is permitted in the Graveglia stream. Fishing is therefore tied to a specific body of water.
