Diano Castello combines sacred architectural history, music, museum culture and historical traces. If you would like to assess a place according to different cultural interests for your trip to Italy, you will encounter churches from several centuries, cultural venues, a museum, as well as evidence of earlier uses and geological formations here.
Churches and Sacred History
The Chiesa di Nostra Signora dell’Assunta is the oldest church in Diano Castello and dates from the 10th century. It also features a late-medieval fresco cycle from the late 15th century depicting the lives of Mary and Christ. This building therefore combines an early date with a clearly later pictorial representation.
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Nicola da Bari was built between 1699 and 1717 in the Baroque style.
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista probably dates from the first half of the 12th century. This cautious dating preserves the chronological uncertainty while nevertheless placing the church within the medieval history of the town.
Music, Theater and Museum
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Nicola da Bari is particularly suitable for religious music events featuring organ and choir.
The Teatro Concordia continues to be a venue for theater performances and classical music. It thus complements the churches as an independent cultural point of reference for visitors who wish to combine different forms of stage and concert culture.
The Convento delle Suore Clarisse houses a museum with books, documents, writings and objects that tell of the nun’s life and work. The different types of objects give this place a personal and documentary character within Diano Castello’s cultural offerings.
Historical Traces and Landscape
The visitable Le Lone comprises two small unsuccessful excavation attempts that belonged to the former hospital of the Castrum. This former affiliation points to a historical use and should therefore not be equated with a present-day hospital function.
The Fontana del Melo preserves the Antelamic façade of the Genoese stone masters from the 13th century.
Historically, the Fontana del Melo served as a resting and refreshment spot for travelers. Those interested in the history of travel will find an additional perspective on this place, without interpreting its former function as its current use.
At Le Lone, Lona also refers to a water-rich underground cave of karstic origin between the S. Maria degli Angeli convent and the Fontana del Melo.
