If you choose Bergamo for culture, history and views, orientation begins with Città Alta: it is the historic heart of Bergamo. The range of topics extends from squares and religious architecture to fortifications and museums, as well as botanical collections and a funicular railway. This allows you to structure your stay according to your interests without reducing Bergamo to a single era.
Città Alta and Piazza Vecchia
Piazza Vecchia was Bergamo’s political center for centuries and remains a place for meeting and leisure. The Palazzo della Ragione dates from the late 12th century and is the oldest surviving municipal seat in Lombardy. The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore combines a Romanesque exterior with a Baroque interior. Those who want to view the city’s development over longer periods will find different historical reference points here in close succession.
Museums and archaeological layers of history
The Museo dell'Ottocento tour is divided into eight sections and traces the history of Bergamo from the uprising against the Serenissima to Italy’s situation after unification. The Civico Museo Archeologico is housed in the 14th-century Palazzo della Cittadella, a building constructed by the Visconti, the lords of Milan. It traces the history of Bergamo and its surrounding area from its beginnings in prehistory to Lombard rule in the Middle Ages. The museum frequently organizes guided tours, workshops and activities that are also aimed at adults.
The Area archeologica preserves remains from various periods, from a protohistoric settlement to the Middle Ages. It includes an Imperial Roman complex of shops along a paved path or square. The Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali “Enrico Caffi” adds natural history topics: it preserves more than 55,000 specimens, including a life-size cast of an Allosaurus skeleton, and presents collections in zoology, entomology, geology and paleontology. The Orto Botanico “Lorenzo Rota” in Città Alta contains more than 1,200 plant species.
Walls, Rocca and views
The Venetian Walls of Bergamo were built in 1561 by the Republic of Venice as an example of Renaissance military architecture. They enclose Città Alta over a length of approximately 6 kilometers. The Museo “Mura di Bergamo” presents the individual stages of planning and the physical construction of the fortress. The walls can be explored on foot or by bicycle and offer views across the plain and toward the Orobie Pre-Alps.
The Rocca is a 14th-century fortification on Sant’Eufemia Hill. The Rocca’s tower offers a 360-degree view of Città Alta, the Orobie Pre-Alps, the Bergamo plain and as far as Milan. The Campanone also rises prominently: it stands 52.76 meters above Piazza Vecchia and offers a panoramic view of the old town.
Getting around Bergamo
The funicular railway travels up and down between the stations, runs among blooming gardens and distinctive viewpoints, and offers panoramic views over the Po Valley in clear weather. In this way, Bergamo combines historical orientation with changing views of the city and landscape. For further local research, you can also visit Almè, Villassio, Castione Della Presolana, Grumello Del Monte, Brembate, Bagnatica, Treviglio and Colognola.
