Canonica D'adda between the Adda and Brembo

Canonica D'adda lies at the confluence of the Adda and Brembo. In the historic town centre, the streets follow the course of the river. The waterside location therefore shapes not only the landscape but also orientation within the townscape. Canonica D'adda thus combines several specific local features: the river area at the confluence, the streets of the historic town centre, the churches and the Bosco in Mezzo wetland.

Rivers, trade and local history

Archaeological finds in the parish church of Canonica D'adda show that an already organised and stable settlement existed in the 1st century AD. This settlement was devoted to trade, which was enabled by traffic in the river port. An important Roman road also crossed the river in Canonica D'adda. In the 13th century, an active trading port and a ferry are documented; they connected the two riverbanks until the beginning of the 19th century. The rivers are therefore also part of the town's economic history.

Churches and historical periods

The present-day Church of San Giovanni Evangelista was built in 1755, after the old parish church had been almost completely demolished. San Giovanni Evangelista was the seat of the chapter of the Pieve di Pontirolo. This pieve was founded between the 8th and 9th centuries and comprised 36 villages. For visitors interested in cultural history, early settlement, ecclesiastical history and an 18th-century church building can therefore be followed in a clear chronological sequence.

Wetland and water engineering

The Bosco in Mezzo wetland extends across the municipal area of Canonica D'adda. Its riparian forests consist of black poplars and white willows; they also include areas of marsh vegetation. The wetland provides wildlife with shelter and feeding areas. The intake structures of the Roggia Vailata are also located at the confluence of the Brembo and Adda. The associated intake structure consists of a fixed weir that crosses the river for more than 130 metres. The landscape therefore encompasses both near-natural habitats and an element of water management.

Nature trail, Sant’Anna and music

A botanical nature trail begins at the intake structures of the Roggia Vailata in Canonica D'adda. It offers panoramic views from the banks near Vaprio and Canonica, as well as information panels on the local flora and fauna. The former Church of Sant’Anna is still a destination for outings in the greenery of Parco Adda Nord. After its restoration, it was used for cultural events, celebrations and civil weddings. On 27 December each year, the cultural office also organises a free concert of Christmas music in the parish church; the event is open to the public.

Cycling tours and the river landscape

The Adda cycle path runs from Cassano d’Adda to Lecco, is 45 km long (one way) and mainly follows wide gravel paths. The townscape includes the historic town centre and the churches; the river landscape includes Bosco in Mezzo, the intake structures and the botanical nature trail.
