Comun Nuovo between its founding history and landscape conservation

Comun Nuovo combines a clearly dated founding history with visible traces of later architectural and municipal history. The documented history begins in 1238: eleven families from Bergamo drained the lands known as “Prato Novo di Vezzanica (Zanica)”. In 1253, seventeen families from Prato Novo bought the ownership of the village from the municipality of Bergamo. The newly formed community organized itself as a small fortified village. For you, the history of the place therefore begins with both its landscape and its community.

The medieval development includes the conflicts involving the Suardi family. Guelph troops attacked the Ghibelline Suardi in 1315, 1379 and 1404. The Suardi family had privatized the small castle in the center of the settlement. The founding, fortification and political conflicts therefore shape the historical study of Comun Nuovo.

Palazzo Benaglio and the central square

A prominent landmark is Palazzo Benaglio. It is first documented in the 15th century as an agricultural estate. It was later converted into a representative country residence and decorated with frescoes and other decorations that can still be seen today. At the request of the residents of Comun Nuovo, the palazzo was converted into the municipal seat in order to preserve the building. Its history thus leads from agriculture through representative architecture to municipal use.

The central square also features a dated element: the monumental sundial dates from 2002. The history of the place also includes the former castle gatehouse, which was reused as the bell tower of the parish church built in the 17th century. This gives you different ways to explore local history, architecture and public space.

Natural area along the Rio Morla

The second major focus is the Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale del Rio Morla e delle rogge. It was established in 2004 and protects the last areas still used for agriculture, as well as the semi-natural open spaces in its territory. At the same time, the park connects the habitats of the Serio River in the east with those of the Adda and Brembo rivers in the west. Landscape conservation complements the historical topics with nature, land preservation and habitat connectivity.

The park organizes environmental education activities for children and adults. This makes it possible to combine the natural area both with family-oriented interests and with a deeper engagement with the landscape. For spatial orientation around Comun Nuovo, the transport corridor includes Francesca, Cremisina and Bergamina roads, which run outside the municipal area. If you would like to combine culture and nature during your stay, you will find two clearly documented areas of interest here.
