Gromo: History, Caves and Trails around the Serio

History along the Serio River

The location by the river also shapes the historical perspective. Castello Ginami was built in 1226 and stands on a rocky promontory above the Serio. The river formed an important crossing point and a strategic location for controlling the valley.

Palazzo Milesi dates from the 15th century; the year 1456 is considered its date of construction. Castello Ginami and Palazzo Milesi come from different historical periods. The date of 1456 is based on records handed down over time. Its cellar was formerly used to store iron bars and iron blocks, which were used to make weapons.

Cave, elevation and forest

Büs di Tàcoi is a 1,500-metre-long cave with extensive karst features. These include shafts, meanders, galleries, narrow passages, chimneys, lakes and siphons, as well as sinter formations in different colours. This gives you a clearly defined natural attraction that differs distinctly from the historic buildings in the town.

For practical planning, the location of the entrance is important: it lies at an altitude of 1,500 metres on Monte Redondo, opposite Gromo town centre on the road to the Boario Spiazzi district. From there, the cave can be reached after approximately one hour on foot. Since 18 May 2024, Büs di Tàcoi has been accessible only to appropriately authorised persons in accordance with the municipal regulations.

The easiest route from the entrance to Büs di Tàcoi to Lago Verde covers approximately 600 metres, climbs 182 metres in elevation and takes 5 to 7 hours. If you plan this connection, the stated duration forms part of your day’s itinerary; the route should be regarded as a separate undertaking. The walk to the cave takes approximately one hour, while the connection to Lago Verde takes 5 to 7 hours.

In Spiazzi di Gromo, the Parco sospeso nel bosco is located within the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. The facility is situated in a centuries-old fir forest and comprises 123 aerial activities; the courses are differentiated by difficulty level. Here, movement between the trees is the main focus, while Büs di Tàcoi describes an underground karst landscape.

On the way between Gromo and Spiazzi

Gromo is also a specific point of reference for a more active stay. The Val Sedornia a Gromo mountain-bike route begins in Gromo and follows the paved road uphill to Spiazzi di Gromo and the bike park there. The mountain-bike route uses a paved road; the route to the cave begins at the entrance and continues on foot. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider whether the starting point in the town or the destinations in Spiazzi are the more important geographical reference for you. This allows you to align the location of your accommodation with your planned daily activities.
