Ponte San Pietro between sacred history and riverside landscapes

Ponte San Pietro combines a diverse church heritage with the Isolotto and the lower reaches of the Brembo. If you would like to combine historic architecture, religious art and a long-established landscape, you will find several different points of interest here to help plan your trip.

Churches and their architectural history

The Chiesa “Vecchia Sussidiaria” S. Pietro e Paolo was completely rebuilt in Baroque forms, replacing an older building. Its choir houses three paintings by Giovanni Carobbio from 1738, including Caduta di Simon Mago.

The scenographically designed forecourt features nine statues created by Antonio Maria Pirovano in 1745 and 1748. They are considered his most famous work and the most important sculptural evidence of Baroque art in the Bergamo area. The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was consecrated on 28 April 1934 by the auxiliary bishop of Bergamo, Adriano Bernareggi; on that occasion, the older dedication to Santi Pietro e Paolo was transferred.

The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is characterised by Neo-Gothic forms. Stone from Bagnatica and Ghiandone granite were used for its construction and columns. Above the entrance to the Chiesa di San Marco is a fresco depicting the Crucifixion.

In the hamlet of Locate Bergamasco, the Chiesa Locate S. Antonino Martire was built as early as the 14th century. It was expanded and consecrated in the second half of the 19th century; it was dedicated to Saint Antoninus Martyr and received relics of Saints Alexander of Bergamo and Vincent, which were sealed in the mensa of the high altar. The Chiesa di San Marco was originally built in the 14th century as a small chapel in the fields where the victims of major plague epidemics were buried.

The Isolotto and the Brembo

The Isolotto is Ponte San Pietro’s last natural area. Rare orchids bloom there, about 100 metres from the historic town centre. The Isolotto was once a large alluvial river island; its rural surroundings form part of Ponte San Pietro’s historical heritage. The Chiesa di San Marco is a short distance from the banks of the Brembo River.

Getting there and finding your way around

Ponte San Pietro railway station is served by the Milano Porta Garibaldi–Bergamo and Lecco–Bergamo railway lines. In addition, ATB bus line 8 connects Bergamo with Ponte San Pietro. At the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, there is a car park next to the bell tower with a ramp accessible to people with disabilities. There are parking spaces opposite the Chiesa Locate S. Antonino Martire; both entrances are at ground level and therefore easily accessible to everyone.
