Zogno: Museums, Cave and Cycling Route

Zogno between history and landscape

Zogno can be explored through cultural history, local memory and experiences in the landscape. The Museo della Valle is an ethnographic and archaeological museum founded in 1979. It includes archaeological finds; numerous remains of collective burials were discovered in the Buca di Andrea, dating from the middle of the 3rd millennium to the 19th century BC.

Museums and Villa Belotti

The cultural perspective is deepened through several distinct themes. The Museo del Soldato displays weapons, uniforms, hats, badges, photographs and letters from the front. Photographs and letters complement the equipment with written testimonies. The Museo di S. Lorenzo presents materials on the development of popular religious traditions in Zogno over the centuries. The Casa Museo Bortolo Belotti is located in Villa Belotti and conveys moments from the historian’s life through the rooms inhabited by Bortolo Belotti. The villa also includes the “Convito dei Grandi Brembani”, with eleven busts of famous men from families originating in Val Brembana; the busts were created by the Bergamo sculptor Nino Galizzi. In this way, military testimonies, religious development and personal history stand side by side without being limited to the same historical perspective.

The Grotte delle Meraviglie

The Grotte delle Meraviglie adds a theme of nature and exploration. It was first explored in 1932 and was among the first caves in Italy to open to tourism in 1939. Inside the cave, stalagmites and stalactites form limestone columns in a variety of shapes. The lower entrance leads through a 73-metre-long artificial tunnel. Historical exploration, geological formations and the artificially constructed tunnel give the cave three clearly distinct facets that you can take into account when planning a stay focused on culture and landscape.

Chapels and Oratories

The municipal project “Oratori e chiesette del territorio comunale” provides visitor routes to the chapels and oratories in the municipal area, supported by signage and informational material. If you would like to view sacred sites not only individually but also as part of a thematic context, this planned connection provides a clear framework for planning your days. The project provides signage and informational material to support these routes.

Cycling Route and River Course

The Val Brembana cycling route begins in Zogno and runs for 21 kilometres, with an elevation gain of 200 metres, to Piazza Brembana. For planning a day out, the 21 kilometres and the 200 metres of elevation gain can be considered as two separate aspects of the route. The Brembo River runs through Zogno and forms an independent geographical reference alongside the course of the cycling route. This allows you to distinguish between two different perspectives when planning: the linear ride from Zogno to Piazza Brembana and the river course through Zogno.
