Discover Adro: Churches, Castle Ruins and Monte Alto
Adro lies at the foot of Monte Alto and includes the hamlet of Torbiato. The town brings together churches, a historic settlement, hiking experiences and wineries for a journey filled with culture, history and local character. The third stage of the long-distance hiking trail La Via delle Sorelle passes through Adro. For your planning, you can therefore choose between the town’s historic buildings, Monte Alto and its culinary offerings.
Churches with historical and religious significance
The Madonna della Neve Sanctuary has a crypt beneath the presbytery, accessible by three stairways: two side stairways and a wider central one. The church is associated with a Marian apparition said to have taken place on 8 July 1519 in Adro, at the site of Oneto. Every year on 5 August, a religious festival is held there, featuring Masses, processions and religious rites. It is complemented by a traditional fair with stalls selling local products.
The Church of Santa Maria in Favento was built at least as early as the 13th century and is the oldest surviving sacred building in Adro. Its painted panels and frescoes were added from the early 14th century until the middle of the 16th century.
In the town centre stands the Church of San Giovanni Battista, a new parish church from the 17th and 18th centuries with abundant Baroque stucco and decorative features, as well as works by Fantoni da Rovetta. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Castello was rebuilt from 1505 onwards on the site of the remaining medieval castle complex. It served as Adro’s parish church until it was replaced by San Giovanni Battista in the 17th century. The interior, consecrated in 1522, has a single-nave layout with a wooden-beam ceiling and decorated terracotta tiles.
Castle Ruins and the Bargnani-Dandolo Palace
Ruins dating from the 14th century remain from the medieval fortifications of Adro’s historic settlement. They include the Ghibelline Tower, the town’s landmark. The entrance gate is the only fully preserved remnant of the old castle. The Bargnani-Dandolo Palace acquired its eclectic appearance through several building projects in the 17th and 18th centuries; the first project is probably dated to between 1670 and 1680. On 31 January 1904, Ermellina Maselli di Figino, the widow of Count Tullio Dandolo, donated the palace to the municipality of Adro.
Monte Alto, Bus Connections and Wineries
On Monte Alto, in the vicinity of Adro, there is an easy circular hiking trail of around 7 kilometres with views of Franciacorta and Lake Iseo. ARRIVA serves Adro with bus route LS025 between Brescia and Paratico; the stop is located on Via Provinciale. Adro is also home to numerous wineries offering tours and tastings.
The local history also includes textile production: Adro was historically a centre of this industry, and numerous spinning mills operated there until the beginning of the 20th century. In Adro, sacred art, medieval architectural history, an easy trail on Monte Alto, wine and an industrial past thus come together.
