Discover Iseo: Nature, Lakeside and Medieval Heritage

Iseo combines lakeside scenery, protected wetlands and medieval architectural heritage into a varied destination on Lake Sebino. If you would like to combine nature and culture, you will find both the Torbiere del Sebino nature reserve and a historic center with castles, churches, walls and a museum here. The townscape is complemented by the railway station, lakeside promenade and marina.

Torbiere del Sebino: Protected Landscape and Nature Trails

The Torbiere del Sebino nature reserve is a wetland of glacial origin. It protects 360 hectares spread across the municipalities of Provaglio D’Iseo, Corte Franca and Iseo. At the same time, the area has the status of a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. As a Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area, it also belongs to the Natura 2000 network. This natural area is particularly interesting if you would like to experience the landscape in its protected form.

The nature reserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Its trails can be accessed through the official entrances after purchasing an admission ticket. The North-Central Trail, the northern loop of the area, begins and ends at the Iseo visitor center and is 6.5 km long. The clearly stated route length helps you fit a hike through the Torbiere into your daily schedule without reducing the natural area to merely a viewpoint.

Railway Station, Lakeside Promenade and Monte Isola

Iseo railway station is connected to Brescia by the historic Sebino railway line. In the town, the lakeside promenade leads to the marina, from which you can cross to Monte Isola. This gives you different points of reference when planning your trip to Iseo: the railway connection to Brescia, the route along the water and a possible destination for an excursion on the lake.

Historic Center and Castello Oldofredi

Castello Oldofredi stands on a rocky outcrop in the southern part of Iseo’s historic center. It is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in the Brescia area. The Museo della Guerra is located in the former Church of San Marco inside the castle. The castle complex and museum thus lead to different historical topics, without equating the church’s former use with its current museum function.

The Pieve di Sant’Andrea also shapes Iseo’s historic character. The church houses Francesco Hayez’s painting “Arcangelo Michele” from 1839. According to tradition, the parish church was founded between the late 5th and early 6th centuries at a site that had already been inhabited in Roman times. The central bell tower was incorporated into the façade of an older church in the 12th century.

Further heritage sites range from the Palazzo dell’Arsenale to the medieval walls. The Palazzo dell’Arsenale is a 14th-century building that originally served as an armory and later as a warehouse. Among Iseo’s surviving medieval walls is the still-visible Torre del Sambuco, dating from the 14th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Mercato was commissioned in the 14th century by Giacomo Oldofredi for himself and the local population.

The Chiesa di San Silvestro o dei Disciplini is used exclusively for tourism purposes. Together with the Pieve di Sant’Andrea, Castello Oldofredi, Palazzo dell’Arsenale and Torre del Sambuco, it shows how many different historical layers coexist in Iseo. This allows you to organize your stay around protected nature, the lakeside and architectural history.
