Casto between via ferratas and ironworking heritage

Casto combines gorges, via ferratas and the history of ironworking. The Via Ferrate di Casto and the Stretta di Luina represent via ferratas and a gorge, while the Parco delle Fucine illustrates ironworking.

Via ferratas between rock and water

The centrepiece of Casto’s active outdoor offering is the Via Ferrate di Casto, a via ferrata laid out as a circular route. It consists of 21 independent sections, is approximately 2,000 metres long in total and has an elevation difference of around 700 metres. The facility therefore offers a variety of passages within one connected experience, without requiring you to understand the individual sections as one single continuous climbing route.

The Stretta di Luina is a gorge carved into the rock by water, where the via ferrata sections run close to the water, which continues to flow. The route to Rifugio Paradiso also follows a natural course: it accompanies the river through the entire “Pisot” gorge and passes beneath a waterfall. For planning purposes, it is therefore worth considering the route lengths and requirements of each activity separately.

Ironworking as part of the local landscape

The historic industrial district in the Parco delle Fucine includes six smithies, a smelting furnace, a mill and a lime kiln. The Museo Fucina Zanetti presents Casto’s history connected with ironworking since the 17th century, when there were 35 facilities here.

The museum preserves an iron hammer with its waterwheel, as well as another wheel that formerly powered a cutting machine. The approximately 3 km-long “La Valle delle Fucine” route can be followed in conjunction with a visit to the museum. Along the route, the remains of further ironworking structures can be seen, including the Fucina Noe and the Fucina Boche. This makes it possible to explore the technical history not only indoors, but also along a dedicated route.

Activities with clear requirements

The via ferratas of the Via Ferrate di Casto have a minimum age requirement of over 10 years and a minimum height requirement of 1.30 metres. Mountain clothing, technical footwear and safety equipment are required.

Another activity in the Parco delle Fucine is the zip line. It consists of two descents and connects two opposite mountain slopes with a steel cable. It is accessible to people over 10 years old and weighing under 90 kg; the ticket and the required equipment are available at the information point.

Mountain scenery and historic sites

For several years, a race has been held in May whose route starts in the town of Casto, reaches Monte Nasego and passes through the municipal areas of Casto and Lodrino. Above Auro (Casto), the Santuario Madonna della Neve was built in the mid-16th century. These two destinations complement the choice between a sporting focus and cultural and historical exploration.

The options in Casto therefore range from the Via Ferrate di Casto and the Stretta di Luina to the Parco delle Fucine and the route to Rifugio Paradiso. Two further cultural and historical points of interest are the Museo Fucina Zanetti and the Santuario Madonna della Neve.
