Provaglio D'Iseo between the Torbiere and cultural heritage

Provaglio D'Iseo combines nature observation, sacred architectural history and diverse trails to create a multifaceted destination. The Riserva Naturale Torbiere del Sebino is particularly defining: the nature reserve in the Lombardy region also includes Provaglio D'Iseo, covers around 360 hectares and is the largest wetland in the province of Brescia. The range of experiences therefore extends from peaceful landscapes to cultural discoveries.

Wetland and birdwatching

Along the central trail in the Riserva Naturale Torbiere del Sebino, there are four observation points for birdwatching. The northern trail also features an observation tower with a 360-degree view of the basins to the south. Those who want to combine their stay with experiences in nature will therefore find specific viewpoints and different perspectives of the wetland here.

Churches with a special history

The Church of San Pietro in Lamosa preserves a rich wall-painting decoration from the 12th to the 14th century in its northern annex. San Pietro in Lamosa is the oldest and the only still recognizable Cluniac foundation on Lake Iseo. The site therefore represents a long ecclesiastical tradition that can be directly traced through its surviving architectural and artistic works.

The church and the Santuario della Madonna del Corno stand on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 427 metres. From there, you can overlook the Torbiere del Sebino, the southern part of Lake Iseo and, on clear days, the distant plain. San Rocco also leads into another historical layer: the church is the most visible part of an early medieval fortified settlement above Pian delle Viti in Provaglio D'Iseo.

The fortification of Provaglio D'Iseo was part of a strategic system of castles that controlled land routes and shipping in the lower Sebino and northern Franciacorta. Palazzo Francesconi complements this with a complex building ensemble dating from the late 15th century, built over medieval remains. Its Renaissance section has a broad portico on the south side, topped by loggias. The Church of San Bernardo contains frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries that were uncovered during restoration work in the 1990s.

Circular routes and longer stages

A 4-kilometre circular trail through the Riserva Naturale Torbiere del Sebino begins at the Monastero di San Pietro in Lamosa and returns to the monastery via wooden walkways. Another circular hike from the centre of Provaglio D'Iseo leads to the Santuario della Madonna del Corno, the Corno del Creilì and the summit of Monte Cognolo before returning to the old town.

Provaglio D'Iseo also lies along the second and third stages of the Via delle Sorelle. This 130-kilometre trail connects Brescia and Bergamo. Depending on your travel plans, you can therefore focus on a circular route, a hike returning to the old town or a section of a longer long-distance trail.

Franciacorta as a culinary highlight
